Elementary school students hop to raise money for camp

FARMINGTON - It’s surprising how much noise twenty kids jumping up and down on a gym floor can make.

The kindergarten and first grade classes at W.G. Mallett School participated in the first ever “Hop-a-thon” today. The goal is to raise money for the Pine Tree Camp, with the students gathering pledges and donations.

Established in 1945, the Pine Tree Camp offers children and adults with disabilities a summer camp experience. The camp is in Rome, Maine, on a 280-acre piece of property on North Pond, and has been designed to offer a variety of fun activities for campers, including swimming, fishing, boating, outdoor games, kayaking, and arts and crafts.

Wearing paper bunny ears, the students hopped for three-minute stretches, their leaps counted by volunteers, ed techs and teachers.

The idea for the event came from Tristan Bouchard, who hopes to attend the Pine Tree Camp this summer. After the students were finished, Bouchard thanked them for helping the camp.

“Thank you,” he said. “Good job.”
