Boys charged in bomb making and explosions

RANGELEY – Three boys have each been charged with two crimes after police say they made two explosive devices using instructions from a Web site. One of the bombs exploded and blew out a vehicle’s window Saturday night.

Police Chief Dennis Leahy said someone called to report three boys, aged 15,16,17, were making pipe bombs.

“It turned out not to be pipe bombs but morning glory bombs,” Leahy said. The youths, who will not be identified here because they are under the age of 18, allegedly went online to an Internet site that showed them how to make the bombs using sparklers as the ignition material.

The boys reportedly threw the bomb devices in a neighborhood in town and they “made pretty good noise. We got a lot of calls about the noise,” Leahy said. One of the bombs thrown hit the side of a vehicle and blew out the window and damaged the driver’s side door.

The three are all charged with criminal use of explosives and criminal mischief, due to the damage to the vehicle.

The boys were released into the custody of their parents and are due in juvenile court on Dec. 31.
