Local doctor participates in ‘Cover the Uninsured Week’

1 min read

FARMINGTON – A local family physician is offering Farmington area residents without medical insurance a one day opportunity to see a medical doctor for whatever they can afford. Dr. Jean Antonucci will offer medical appointments on Thursday, March 25 and in return ask patients to “pay what you can” as part of National Cover the Uninsured Week.

Dr. Jean Antonucci

“If meaningful healthcare reform doesn’t take place in Washington, D.C. this year, the number of uninsured will only get larger and the recession has made things worse as more people have lost their jobs and health benefits,” Dr. Antonucci said.

Contrary to popular belief, the uninsured could be anybody, not just the poor or unemployed. Eighty percent of the uninsured live in families where the head of the household works, and 70 percent had household incomes of $25,000 or more. An estimated 20,000 Americans die each year because of lack of health insurance.

“This is my contribution to help provide some medical assistance to our neighbors who don’t have health insurance and at the same time raise awareness of the plight of the uninsured in America,” Dr. Antonucci said.

The cost of lab tests, x-rays and medications is not included.

Due to the limited availability, this offer is limited to residents who do not have health insurance. Patients must schedule the appointment ahead of time. To schedule an appointment, call Dr. Antonucci’s office at 778-3313.

  1. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every doctor would jump on board. Dr. Antonucci is my hero!

  2. I applaud Dr. Antonucci’s idea and efforts.

This is a wonderful example of an individual thinking ‘out of the box’ and doing something on her own to make a difference.

I hope it serves as an example to all of our area healthcare providers to offer something similar to our community.

    Hats off to Dr. Antonucci!

  3. good work Dr. A.

    but the claim that:
“An estimated 20,000 Americans die each year because of lack of health insurance.”

is very very hard to prove!

and shouldn’t food and water come before health care

    from the New York Times:

    Hunger in U.S. at a 14-Year High

    By JASON DePARLE
    Published: November 16, 2009

WASHINGTON — The number of Americans who lived in households that lacked consistent access to adequate food soared last year, to 49 million, the highest since the government began tracking what it calls “food insecurity” 14 years ago, the Department of Agriculture reported Monday.

we clearly need the government to supply us with food and water! because without it we can’t have health care!

  4. Well Hutch, I don’t personally think its the governments job to provide food and water, but they do actually have programs out there for that, if you really need it. But too many people are going without basic health care because its the first thing to get dropped out of their budgets. They DO buy food first, and since they don’t have adequate insurance, if any at all, they forgo checkups and “well child” visits because they can’t afford it. Dr. Antonucci is making a difference here, even if it is a small one. “A thousand points of light”, remember? What are YOU doing?
Kudos Dr. J, we already knew you were a hero, this just proves it. xoxo

  5. j.

my hand is out, i want free health care, free food, free water, free education, free housing, give me, give me, give me. i don’t want to contribute, i want to receive!

Give me some of that Obama money!

  6. Thanks Dr. Antonucci for doing this and for participating in National Covered the Uninsured Week. You efforts are very much appreciated!

  7. thank you so much dr. antonucci. you’ve put your money where your mouth is and our community really needs it.

“and shouldn’t food and water come before health care” well, hutch, i have to say i’m a little surprised that you’re suddenly concerned about public health. of course i know you’re really not. but i might ask anyway, shouldn’t health care come before education? because nobody has a problem with the government supplying that.

  8. “An estimated 20,000 Americans die each year because of lack of health insurance.”

an estimated 2,252,571 deaths per year in the U.S.

the percent of people that died because they don’t have insurance each year = 0.008878 % lets round it up too 0.01%

42,636 people killed in car accidents in 2005!

    wake up people!

  9. I knew you were the best doctor ever, Dr. Antonucci, and this wonderful day of service proves it!

  10. oh, and dr. antonucci, when you see hutch coming remember to turn the other cheek (though i might just say heal thyself!)

  11. I know Hutch
    Have known him for awhile
    Kinda like him!
I guess we do disagree on somethings though.
    That’s allowed:)

  12. As students we know how hard it is to not have health insurance. Dr. Antonucci is very helpful and this is very considerate of her!

  13. If Hutch wants to be a Serf, then let him. I think the Doc is doing the American thing…people helping people.

  14. not to worry antmore doc did your read the headlines this morning?
