Bates sweeps UMF in doubleheader action

FARMINGTON – Bates College used big innings to bull past the University of Maine at Farmington 13-3, 15-6 in non-conference softball action this afternoon at Prescott Field

The Beavers (4-10 overall) are scheduled to host Husson University in North Atlantic Conference competition Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Bobcats, who ended a 12-game losing skid, improved to 4-16 and are slated to host Colby College Friday at 4 p.m.

In the first game, the Beavers held a 3-1 edge before the Bobcats erupted for five runs in the fifth inning and padded their lead with seven runs over the final two frames.

Monica Berube (Plaistow, NH) singled, tripled and plated three runs for Bates, while Karen Ullman (Ramsey, NJ) singled and tripled, Lauren Dobish (Chamberburg, PA) singled and doubled and Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, MA) collected three infield singles as the Bobcats recorded 15 hits.

Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) gave Farmington the 3-1 lead with a two-run home run in the third. Mitchell and McKell Barnes (Durham, ME) each had three-hit games with Barnes notching an RBI double.

Kristen Finn (Winthrop, MA) hurled a complete game in the win with nine hits allowed, four walks and two strikeouts.

Jess Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) issued three free passes and struck out two in a complete-game loss.

In the second game, the Bobcats paraded 10 runs across in the fifth on four hits, seven walks, two hit batters and an error to take the 15-6 mercy-rule shortened win.

A pinch-hit three-run double by Libby King (South Portland, ME) headlined the inning’s action for the Bobcats. Leah MacIejewski (Tewksbury, MA) singled twice with three RBI with Dobish singling, doubling and pushing across a pair of runs.

Barnes slugged a three-run homer as the Beavers scored four times in the fifth to try to avoid the mercy rule. Barnes also singled in the game, while Lily Barry (Hermon, ME) stroked a two-run homer.

Carolin Gattuso (North Reading, MA) notched win. Gattuso did not walk or strike out a batter in five innings.

Whitney Page (Sorrento, ME) took the losses with two walks and a strikeout over four innings.
