RANGELEY – Although we all hope for a warm and sunny summer, it seems everyone needs a break once and awhile from the heat. After a day of soaking up the sun at the beach, come to the Rangeley Public Library to cool off and enjoy some great book discussions. This summer the Rangeley Public Library will be running two book groups at no cost.

The Busy Bee Book Group will meet the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Rangeley Public Library. The early evening start time still gives patrons and visitors a chance to enjoy outdoor recreation during the day while exercising their minds at night. In addition, the 6 p.m. start time accommodates those who work during the day.

The Busy Bee Book Group will be reading The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terry Ryan for discussion on June 29th. The book is a true account of Evelyn Ryan, mother of six sons and four daughters, who kept her family afloat during the “contest era” of the 1950s and 1960s by writing jingles and entering TV, radio, newspaper, and direct-mail contests. Pubishers Weekly wrote that “this well-told, suspenseful tale is peppered with examples of Evelyn’s winning poems and slogans, taken from the years of notebooks that she saved and passed on to her daughter, and has a fiction-worthy climax that will keep listeners laughing even as they’re glued to Ryan’s tale.”

A second book group geared towards men will take place the second Tuesday of each month and will feature non-fiction stories of survival and adventure. The group will be reading Winterdance by Gary Paulsen for the June 8th discussion. In the book, author Gary Paulsen presents an account of his participation in the 1,100-mile-long dogsled race called the “Iditarod.” For 17 days, Paulsen and his team of dogs endured blinding wind, snowstorms, moose attacks, and more–yet relentlessly pushed on to the end.

Both book groups will continue throughout the summer with future titles to be announced. There is no charge to participate in the book groups and copies may be picked up at the Rangeley Public Library. The Rangeley Public is open Tuesday 10-7, Wednesday-Friday 10-4:30, and Saturday 10-2.
