RANGELEY – If parents are looking to help their children overcome some bouts of boredom this summer the Rangeley Public Library has just the activity. The Rangeley Public Library is now taking registration for the 2010 summer reading program otherwise known as Beach Camp. Free to all, this literature based program will run from July 6th to August 18th and will be led by educator, Sue Damm.

Children between the ages of 3 and 5 can sign-up for either Tuesdays or Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Children between the ages of 6 and 9 can sign-up for Fridays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The programs will feature age appropriate stories and activities all connected to the earth’s underwater world and water activities. Spots are limited so registration is strongly recommended.

“The program has really grown over the last couple of years. Sue has done a tremendous job of making the Library a fun place for the kids while making books really exciting. The Rangeley Public Library is really fortunate to have a professional educator get the kids excited to read,” said director, Martin Gagnon.

This year Sue will have plenty of new books to use in the summer reading program thanks to a generous Books for Children grant awarded to the Rangeley Public Library from The Libri Foundation. The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization which donates new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small public libraries. Since October 1990, the Libri Foundation has donated over $4,000,000 worth of new children’s books to over 2,800 libraries in 49 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. All of the books purchased by the Rangeley Library can be checked out.

Seeking a contributing community sponsor, RPL turned to the Friends of the Rangeley Public Library for some financial support. In the grant application process the Libri Foundation states that it “works with local organizations because they believe in community involvement and want to encourage and reward local support of libraries. The local sponsor can make a contribution which the Libri Foundation will match on a 2-to-1 ratio.”

“I really want to thank the Friends for being our local sponsor and for their continual support of Library programming and services. We have some great titles on the way and I know these books will be enjoyed and loved by all our patrons. Reading to young children gives them a desire to read. The more we read to our children, the more our children are likely to succeed,” Gagnon said.
