FARMINGTON – Edgar E. Brackett, 86, of Rangeley, died comfortably at Franklin Memorial Hospital on Dec. 9, 2010 surrounded by his family. Twelve years earlier, on the very same day, on the very hour, at the exact minute, Edgar lost his beloved wife Philomene Mae Goding to kidney disease after being married 48 years.

Edgar E. Brackett

Edgar was born in Lower Dallas, in Rangeley on Dec. 23, 1923, at the home of his parents Owen and Mabel Brackett both of Rangeley. On Sept. 14, 1951 Edgar married Philomene and together they raised six children in their home on Pleasant Street.

Edgar worked as a carpenter and finish carpenter for most of his life, having built many beautiful homes, churches, and camps throughout the Rangeley Region for S.A. Collins and Sons, R.H. Thompson and Sons and R.W. Sargent and Sons. When carpentry was slow, his list of work varied. Edgar worked his father’s dairy farm, drove a log truck, cut and hauled wood with a team of horses, cooked in logging camps, worked as a linesman running power lines from Rangeley Plantation to Rumford and set poles for a lift to the top of Saddleback.

Never losing his love for the family farm, Edgar grew a large garden and raised something in the barn to feed his family. After his retirement and especially after the loss of his wife, Edgar rekindled his love of wood working to pass the time of day. With his love of numbers, precision and a good challenge, Edgar created unique and intricate birdhouses all with several hundred handmade pieces. Designs were inspired by old log camps on the shores of Rangeley Lake or even some from his favorite Louis Lamour books. Each and every birdhouse was a work of art.

Edgar was predeceased by his parents, his two sisters Flora and Eleanor, his kid brother Phillip, his wife and his nephew Kerry Bubier.

Edgar’s stories and mischievous spirit will be remembered by his family- John and Linda Brackett, Diane Cole, Randy Brackett, Mooch and Goolie Brackett, Becky and Irving Bradstreet, Jake and Heidi Brackett and Jenny and Marty Gagnon; his seven grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters and his ornery little dog, Tiny.

Condolences and tributes may be shared with his family at the funeral home’s website at www.wilesrc.com.
