Rangeley Public Library to start Wii golf league in January

RANGELEY – With the local golf courses covered with snow and the poor economy making the Florida golf courses an unlikely destination, many avid golfers can only wait until next year to once again try for that elusive hole in one.

However, the Rangeley Public Library has an off-season golf league for both women and men that will keep their golf swings in top form. All are invited to come to the Rangeley Library every Saturday, starting Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. to participate in the Wii Golf League.

The great thing about the Wii video game system is that it is really simplistic to use and is not strenuous. In a recent news report, a 97-year-old woman was in a Wii league.

“Although it cannot replace playing the actual game of golf, this Wii league is still going to be fun for the adults in our community. While the action may not be with real golf clubs and golf bags, the challenge that is part of golf will still be there,” said Library Director Martin Gagnon. Legendary commentator Brent Musburger said of golf, “I’d play every day if I could.  It’s cheaper than a shrink and there are no telephones on my golf cart.”

According to doctors regular mild activity can protect the body as it ages by strengthening bones and loosening joints. Mild exercise is even thought to decrease cellular aging in the brain. A half-hour’s worth of Wii Golf after dinner might be just what the doctor ordered.

The Rangeley Public Library is open Tuesday 10 – 7, Wednesday thru Friday 10 – 4:30, and Saturday 10 – 2. For more information about the league, please call the Rangeley Public Library at 864-5529 or e-mail us at info@rangeleylibrary.com
