Corporate sponsors, walkers, runner, vendors’ sign up now. On Saturday, Oct. 2, the Hope With Every Step fund raiser for the A-T Children’s Project will be held at the Livermore Falls Recreation Field. Events include a 5K race, a 20-mile walk, a 2-mile walk, along with a Kids’ Fun Day full of family events and entertainment. In order to get their name on the T-shirt, sponsors need to sign up before the Sept. 10 deadline. Vendors who want to set up on the field during the fun day activities are needed. Victory Christian Church, a local sponsor of Back to Church Sunday, is inviting you back to church Sunday, September 12, 2010. Part of a national movement involving more than 3000 churches, this event is designed to encourage unchurched and dechurched people to rediscover the inherent value of being part of a dynamic and relevant local church. LifeWay Research states that 82 percent of people say they would be open to attending church if a friend invited them. But unfortunately, only 21 percent of active church going Christians invited someone to church last year! Wednesday, September 15, Monthly Program: The Fly Rod Crosby Trail. Ben Godsoe from Madrid TWP, Maine and now working on an Americorp grant has spearheaded the development of a new hiking trail in Franklin County. Cornelia (Flyrod) Crosby, who famously said, “I would rather fish any day than go to heaven.” was the first registered Maine guide. She is also said to be the only person to have shot a caribou in Maine. Six feet tall, imposing in stature, deed, and demeanor, she was also the first to tout Maine’s recreational charms and potential. The trail, which runs from Strong to Oquossoc along the Sandy River valley, seeks to tie together her old stomping grounds as well as to highlight the history, culture, and sights of this part of Maine. Ben will introduce us to Fly Rod and the trail that bears her name. Join us at 7PM, C23 in the Roberts Learning Center, UMF, Farmington.
Memory Walk to benefit the Maine Alzheimer’s Association. Saturday, September 25th at Kineowatha Park in Wilton. Concert. New England Celtic Arts will host popular Boston Irish fiddler George Keith and friends at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage, Maine on Sunday, Sept. 5th. Auditions. The Sandy River Players community theater in Farmington will be holding open auditions on Sept. 16, 17, and 18 for their fall production, “Broadway on the Sandy.” The show, to be performed in Nordica Auditorium November 19-21, will comprise a series of individual acts by local performers, potentially to include some of the most popular numbers from past Sandy River Players productions. Local performers of all ages are encouraged to audition. Performers should prepare the Broadway number of their choice, and may either bring their own accompanist or provide piano sheet music of sufficient quality for the performance. Acts will be selected based on quality standards and on the degree of competition that turns out. Auditions will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 6 – 8:00p.m., on Friday, Sept. 17 from 4 – 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. –noon. All auditions will be in Nordica Auditorium on the UMF campus. The Thursday auditions will be held in Room 220 of Merrill Hall, while the Friday and Saturday auditions will be in Nordica Auditorium in Merrill Hall. Hymn Sing. Reeds Mill Church on Reeds Mill Road in Madrid will be hosting its annual fall hymn sing on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. Begun in 1978, the September hymn sing attracts people from near and far who enjoy the atmosphere of this one room, historical church despite the absence of electricity, water, and central heat. The kerosene lamps will be lit lending to the charm. Wilton Safety Discussion. Everyone is invited to a two-way discussion between Police Chief Dennis Brown and Wilton residents, to cover what each group perceives as public safety issues in town. The Franklin County Children’s Task Force will be holding a Parent Education Program entitled The Incredible Years starting Wednesday Sept. 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and runs for 6 weeks. The Incredible Years: Parents and Babies is a 6 week program to support parents and their babies by using a building block approach to learn how to observe and read babies cues and signals, understanding babies as intelligent learners, learning ways to provide physical and tactile stimulation for babies and its importance for brain development, understanding the importance of finding time for oneself to renew energy for parenting, and understanding babies development of object and person permanence. A free 3-hour workshop for anyone interested in starting a business is being offered in Wilton on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010. This introductory workshop will walk you through the pros and cons of owning your own business show you how to get started, point out the major elements of a business plan, introduce the many resources available in the Franklin County area and help you decide whether self employment is the right choice for you! Twilight Meeting for Farmers and Home Gardeners. Come tour, discuss, and taste the outcome of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s research and trial garden in Franklin County. This two-session workshop will address resistance to late blight, flavor, and utility of specific tomato and potato varieties. Bring On The Bus Tour Workshop. University of Maine Cooperative Extension will hold a workshop on how to market businesses, attractions, and communities to the bus tour industry. The workshop costs $35 and will be held at Cooperative Extension’s Farmington office at 138 Pleasant Street on Monday, Sept. 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The motor coach industry is big business and can bring positive economic impacts to communities and businesses. This workshop will give participants an understanding of this industry and the tools needed to tap into the bus tour market. Maine Centers for Women, Work, and Community is offering a one-time Western Maine CA$H a community collaboration that helps working families in Franklin County make the most of the money they have earned. This program provides IRS trained volunteers to prepare tax returns at no cost for low and moderate income workers. Call for further information as this workshop requires five or more people for attendance.This is a career exploration tool that helps clients plan work lives using a paper and pencil format with optional apparatus parts and computerized scoring.
