Annual Nordica Day Concert is Aug. 17
FARMINGTON - It was on Aug. 17, 1911 when world-renowned opera diva and Farmington native Lillian Nordica performed her final concert in Nordica Auditorium. In remembrance and celebration of that event, each year the Nordica Memorial Association seeks a young and up-and-coming opera singer from Maine to perform in a special Nordica Day concert. This year that singer is Jazmin DeRice, soprano, from Windham. She has a degree in Vocal Performance from USM where she is now in her second year of graduate study. She will be accompanied on the piano by Derek Hertzer also a graduate student at USM.
The concert will be held on August 17, 2012 at 7:30 PM in Nordica Auditorium in Merrill Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington.
DeRice has been involved with PortOpera productions for the last four years. She recently appeared in lead roles in USM’s productions of Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica. She is currently involved in a production of Hansel and Gretel for VOX Maine in collaboration with Paperbull Puppets.
The concert will begin at 7:30 in Nordica Auditorium in Merrill Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington where Madame Nordica sang 101 years ago. Ms. DeRice’s program will consist of music by Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Barber, Massanet, de Falla and Mahler.
The Nordica Day Concert has always been considered a gift to the community by the Nordica Memorial Association although donations will be gratefully accepted! There will be a reception following the concert. For more information please call 778-2042.
