PHILLIPS – Author and storyteller Steven Pinkham will bring his tales of the Maine woods to Phillips on Saturday, June 6. The evening of stories, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is being hosted by Fox Carlton Pond Sporting Camps on Toothaker Pond Road in Phillips.

Steve Pinkham, whose stories have entertained thousands over the years, grew up in Western Maine, summering at Flagstaff Lake and Moosehead Lakes, fishing and exploring, eventually getting a degree in Outdoor Recreation when it was a brand new field. An avid hiker, he’s climbed the one hundred highest mountains of New England, as well as 180 mountains in Maine.

In the past 30 years Pinkham has led more than 300 trips and events for various New England-based outdoor clubs. In 2009, Down East Books published his first book, Mountains of Maine, which tells how more than 200 Maine mountains got named, together with their histories and folklore.

Growing up listening to many family stories handed down through generations of lumbermen and guides, Steve began collecting articles on the Maine Woods about 12 years ago and has amassed a collection of more than 25,000 articles, the bulk of them from the 1870s to 1890s. Selecting the very best stories from this collection, he published Old Tales of the Maine Woods in 2012 and More Old Tales of the Maine Woods in 2014. Steve is currently working on his next book, a collection of the written accounts of more than 100 people who climbed Mount Katahdin from 1804 to 1905.

While Pinkham’s presentation on Saturday, June 6, will be preceded by a day-long fly fishing course at Fox Carlton Pond Sporting Camps, one needn’t attend the course to come to the 6:30 p.m. talk. Steve will be signing books during the evening. Donation is $5, with all proceeds to be given to a local cause.
