FARMINGTON – Local author Lawrence Wilbur will be signing copies of “Let Me Take Your Hand : A Memoir” at DDG Booksellers on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.

“Let Me Take Your Hand”

Lawrence Wilbur grew up during the Depression, “poorer than Job’s turkey,” and left school at age 15 to care for his dying mother and siblings. He never went back to school, earning money first by cutting wood, and then working at the Wilton Woolen Mill. In 1953, Wilbur began hand-stitching shoes for G.H. Bass and Co. and spent the last 19 of his 47 years with Bass traveling the world, demonstrating how the renowned Bass Weejuns were made.

From the poverty of his childhood, to his WWII experiences, to his own family and work life, Wilbur’s talents as a born story-teller are evident. As he talks about the interests he developed over time: bee keeping, scuba diving, trick water skiing, ice fishing in below zero weather, or cross stitching – there is always a story, told with eloquent candor and good humor. His courtship and marriage to his wife Hazel, and dealing with the grief at her death, frames the story of his own life.
