WILTON – The artwork of Wilton native Kathi J. Smith is on exhibit at the Wilton Free Public Library. The show, which began as part of the Blueberry Festival celebration, will continue through September.

Smith’s show titled, Home Sweet Home, centers around the theme of backyard spaces, and landscapes that are close to home, some of which are painted in Wilton, she said.

Three years ago, Smith, known widely for her landscape paintings, returned to her roots to organize the Blueberry Festival Art Show.

“I brainstormed the idea of community art show a few years back with Shannon Smith, (festival organizer) after a nostalgic conversation centered around childhood memories of the Blueberry Festival Art show at the Academy Hill School,” she said.

She remembers the show well, as an aspiring artist growing up in Wilton.

“At that age, it was inspiring and fun to see artwork made by children and adults in our community,” Smith said. “So, part of my mission has been to bring that back to Wilton in an effort to promote creativity, the arts, and culture in my home town of Wilton.”

Smith works at her studio in downtown Bangor. She recently moved back to Maine from New Hampshire last year, after accepting a position as assistant professor of studio arts at Husson University. She earned a master of fine arts degree in painting from the University of New Hampshire after completing a bachelor of fine arts at the University of Southern Maine.

Her work has been shown here in Maine-notably at Greenhut Galleries in Portland-as well as across the country, and internationally.

“I’m delighted to be back at home and to contribute to the arts in my home state,” she said. Among her plans is to expand the art show at next year’s Blueberry Festival.
