‘Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington’ at the ECAC on Sept. 17

FARMINGTON – Sally Jones will be performing the one-woman show ‘Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington’ on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Emery Community Arts Center’s performance space.

Sally Jones has portrayed the incomparable Margaret Chase Smith in Linda Britt’s original, one woman show, Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington in various Maine theaters, the most recent being at The Footlights in Falmouth and Out of the Box Theatre in Lewiston. She has also toured the show to South Paris, Mexico, Augusta, Gardiner, Stonington, Skowhegan, Castine, Bailey Island and Portland. With each performance Jones feels that she is on a mission to honor the memory and accomplishments of this remarkable Maine woman.

Jones also directs plays for Oxford Hills Music and Performing Arts Association (OHMPAA) in Norway, Maine. Her shows include I Do, I Do, the Foreigner, Man of La Mancha, and The Odd Couple. She recently adapted the novel The Road to Eden’s Ridge by M. L. Rose into an original stage musical in collaboration with composer Steve Jones (no relation) called The Road to Eden’s Ridge, the Musical. She directed its premier production that played in Norway on the OHMPAA stage to eight sold out performances.

Besides playing Margaret Chase Smith, Jones favorite roles include Sally Sings Sondheim, another one woman show. She also appeared in Nunsense as Mother Superior, Abby in Arsenic and Old Lace, Mrs. Paroo in Music Man, Weazer in Steel Magnolias and Claire in Rumors.

Jones has formed her own production company called For the Love of a Song which brings together outstanding musicians and singers for shows in Western Maine.

Jones received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from the University of Maine. She is a certified teacher and retired from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School where she taught English and drama. She lives in Norway and is is a trustee of the Norway Historical Society.

She would like to thank her daughter, Bonnie, a nurse at Maine Med, who has always supported her mother’s theatre activities, even as a young child.
