FARMINGTON – The Sandy Rivers Players of Farmington and the surrounding communities is excited to announce auditions for its winter production of the musical “1776” which tells the story of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and other founding fathers as they debate and vote upon their decision to approve the Declaration of Independence in the sweltering summer heat in colonial Philadelphia.

Co-director Karen West said that the community was already abuzz with excitement as soon as word leaked out. “People have said to me that they really want to be a part of it, or they can’t wait to see it. Folks know that now is the perfect time for this musical which deals with themes that certainly ring true today.”

Auditions will be held on the University of Maine at Farmington campus on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m., in Roberts C23; on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m., in Nordica Auditorium; and on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in Lincoln Auditorium.

There are (at least) 26 roles available to be cast, with 24 men and two women specified by the script. SRP may also cast women in male roles or cast an all-female chorus in order to maximize community participation in the show. Ages of the roles vary from late teens to late middle age.

Performers wishing to audition for the available roles should come prepared to read scenes from the script and sing a song of their choosing, either a cappella or with an accompanist (provided), as well as singing from the score as part of a group.

“The music of “1776” has rich four-part choruses and beautiful lyrical duets,” said co-director and music director Laura Church, “with lyrics that are sometimes sweet and tender and other times humorous and still other times haunting and a final number that is as relevant today as it was in, well, 1776.”

Seven performances of “1776” will be scheduled over the weekends of Jan. 14 and 21, 2017. For more information please visit the SRP website at www.sandyriverplayers.org, or email srptheatre@gmail.com.
