FARMINGTON – The writer and director of ‘Tumbledown,’ a movie set in western Maine, will be on hand for Saturday showing at Narrow Gauge Cinema. The movie opens Friday.

Portland-based filmmakers Desi Van Til, a Mt. Blue High School graduate, and Sean Mewshaw debuted their film at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2015 and then the Maine International Film Festival in Waterville in July 2015. After receiving positive reviews from critics and audiences alike following its Tribeca premiere, it was purchased for distribution by Starz for nationwide release on Valentine’s Day weekend.

Van Til and Mewshaw will be at the 7 p.m. show on Saturday, Feb. 13 to introduce the film this evening. They will be conducting a Question & Answer session after the showing.

In Tumbledown, a young widow (Rebecca Hall), falls for a brash New York writer (Jason Sudeikis) who barrels into her rural Maine town investigating the death of her husband, folk-music hero Hunter Miles (voiced by Damien Jurado). Hannah is scraping her life back together in a cabin at the foot of Tumbledown mountain, attempting to seal every shred of her husband’s life into a biography. When Andrew, an academic who has a different take on Hunter’s life and death, shows up looking for the truth of this mysterious musician, the pair clash. But gradually they find themselves collaborating to craft Hunter’s story, and beginning to write the next chapter of their lives together.

The film also stars Blythe Danner, Griffin Dunne, Joe Manganiello and Diana Agron.

Bulldog writer Amber Kapiloff asked Van Til a series of questions last summer. That article can be found here. Her article on Tumbledown’s sold-out opening at the Maine International Film Festival can be found here.

  1. I saw Tumbledown this afternoon in Portland. It’s wonderful! Everyone in the theater sat and read all the credits before moving or speaking. The acting is very good, the story is fascinating, and the cinematography is terrific. People from Farmington will see some signs, street shots that are familiar. Loved it!!!!!!!
