FARMINGTON – The Arts Institute of Western Maine is fortunate to welcome to Nordica Auditorium the accomplished violin/piano duo of Dean Stein and Chiharu Naruse on May 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Dean Stein and Chiharu Naruse are presently teaching at Bates College where they have succeeded in mastering and performing all ten of Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas. Their Farmington concert will include Violin Sonata #1, #5 (“Spring Sonata”) and #9, also known as “The Kreutzer,” immortalized by Tolstoi’s dark novella The Kreutzer Sonata.

Stein has performed throughout the world in recitals, with orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and as a soloist. A passionate advocate for chamber music, he is currently first violinist with the Portland String Quartet.

Naruse has performed worldwide in recitals and competitions. She moved to Maine in 2002 and has since been active not only as a performer but teacher, chamber music coach and adjudicator. The Portland Press Herald referred to her as a “world class artist that would grace any concert stage.”

Tickets for The Naruse/Stein Duo can be purchased at the door. Adults are $12 but free for those 18 and under or with a student ID. AIWM is an affiliate of the Univ. of Maine at Farmington. For more information on AIWM visit www.artsinstitute.org.
