FARMINGTON – Franklin Savings Bank has been awarded the 2016 Summiteer Award from the Sugarloaf Charity Summit, in appreciation for “Continuous Giving to the Cancer Community.”

The award was presented to Peter Judkins, president and CEO at Franklin Savings Bank, at the 16th annual Sugarloaf Charity Summit Jan. 30 at Sugarloaf Mountain.

“We are so pleased to have received this recognition,” said Judkins. “To Franklin Savings Bank, the cancer cause is personal. We all can count family members, friends and coworkers among those lost to the disease and our people readily respond when asked to help. When we listened to the stories of survival and loss at the event, we are reminded that there is much left to do to stop cancer in its tracks.”

The Summiteer Award is given each year to an individual or business that has continually given back to the cancer community. While Franklin Savings Bank won the business award, Paula Doughty was named the individual winner. Doughty started the Battle for Breast Cancer, a field hockey tournament now in its eighth year that has raised more than $108,000 for the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center.

In making the award to the bank, Sugarloaf highlighted the significant support the Franklin Savings Bank Community Development Foundation has made to a variety of cancer charities, including the Relay for Life, the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, Free ME from Lung Cancer, and the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. In addition, FSB employees are very active in fund-raising events for the Dempsey Challenge and the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure, as well as the Relay for Life, which involves upwards of 30 employees at the Farmington event and about a dozen employees at the Skowhegan and Rumford events.

“Over the years, the employee turnout for the Relay for Life has been outstanding. It has become our signature event,” said Judkins.

The bank family was also recognized for rallying to cheer the spirits of a co-worker undergoing weekly chemotherapy this summer by wearing pink and sending her funny photos and goodie baskets on her treatment days.

“We are thrilled to recognized Franklin Savings Bank with the 2016 Corporate Summiteer Award. They continually give back to the cancer community, through support of an employee fighting cancer, through their support of Relay for Life, the Dempsey Challenge as well as the Sugarloaf Charity Summit (which benefits the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center and the Maine Cancer Foundation). Our sincere Congratulations on a well-deserved award,” said Martha Bradley, co-chair of the Sugarloaf Charity Summit.

“I’ve known Peter since he was a kid. It was a great day for Franklin Savings Bank when he came home. He does have the community interest at heart,” said Co-Chair Bruce Miles. “Franklin Savings Bank is the role model for what a community bank should be.”
