RSU 73 Spruce Mountain Adult Ed fall classes

LIVERMORE FALLS – Spruce Mountain Adult Education fall offerings include the HiSet preparation (formerly GED) for students wanting to complete their High School Equivalency Exam. Also, RSU 73 will offer certificate classes in culinary arts, retail, and office assistant skills. For further information about any of the following classes or adult education in general, telephone 897-6384. All classes are held at the Adult Learning Center, 25 Cedar Street, Livermore Falls unless otherwise indicated.

The following academic classes begin the week of September 8th. English and Math courses are offered for all academic levels from beginning literacy through college preparation. All students are required to attend orientation prior to enrollment. Courses are provided at no cost.

Introductory Courses include: Beginning Literacy, English I, English II and III, Math I, and Math II and III.
Secondary Preparation include: English I, English II and III, Math I, and Math II and III, English Focus, Social Studies, Reading/Writing Workshop, Science, Core Skills, Math Focus, New Books/New Readers, and Math Lab.

15 Week Adult Education Diploma and High School credit recovery courses will begin the week of September 15th. High School students register with Spruce Mountain High School Guidance Counselor. Adult Education students will register at Spruce Mountain Adult Education at 897-6384.
Algebra 1 – This course is designed to meet the math requirement for the high school diploma and to upgrade the skills of adults preparing for a job, college, or vocational training. The class starts Monday, September 15 from 3-6:30 pm.
Technical Writing – High School Technical Writing is designed for those who want to develop their writing ability. Learn audience considerations, styles, drafting, revision techniques, and more.
The class starts Wednesday September 17th from 3:30-6:30 pm.
Intro to Financial Applications Topics covered in this course include: earning power, budgeting, comparative shopping, saving, investing, purchasing insurance, and selecting credit cards. Students will complete a checkbook simulation which includes writing checks, making deposits, reconciling a checkbook, and maintaining a checkbook register. Guest speakers and field trips will be included. Class starts Monday September 15th from 4-7 pm.

CERTIFICATE CLASSES:
Basic Culinary Arts
This course will prepare students for restaurant work and the ServSafe® certificate exam. Students
will practice cooking, sanitation, dining room skills, and dishwashing. Attendees must adhere to dress code, which includes: clean, light colored, short sleeved shirt, dark, full length slacks or jeans, closed toe shoes, hair nets, and kitchen hats. Aprons will be provided. Attendance is required for all sessions. Two time slots are available; please specify which time slot you would prefer when registering. This class may be used as an elective credit for the Adult Education Diploma. Minimum of 2 students. The kitchen at 9 Cedar St., Livermore Falls will be used. Tuesday & Thursday starts Sep. 16th 1-4 OR 6-9pm.
Cost: $75.00 is the 15 weeks. In addition, $68.00 will be charged for the certificate.

NRFF Retail Certification
Nationally recognized! This two semester course will prepare participants specifically for entry-level retail sales positions. The course concentrates on effective customer sales and service. Upon successful completion of this course and national exam, students will be mailed a certificate from the National Retail Federation. The course components include classroom participation, work experience, and portfolio development. Communication, decision making, interpersonal skills, and lifelong learning will be emphasized. During the second semester, students will participate in an internship or job shadow experience. This class can be used for Adult Education Diploma credit. Upon completion of the class, students can take the national exam. This class starts Monday, September 15th from 9 am-2 pm. Cost is $75.00 for both semesters. There is an additional fee of $75 for the certification.

Office Skills Certificate
Improve your office skills with this standards based program which is suitable for entry-level positions in a variety of office settings. Students may take one or both semesters. This class may be used for Adult Education Diploma credit. Scholarships are available for this class.
Semester 1 (Fall 2014) will include: Keyboarding – Learn the basics of keyboarding or improve your accuracy and speed for employment purposes.
Microsoft Word 2013 – Users will learn to format text by cutting, pasting, copying, changing fonts, adding bullets, changing page layouts, inserting tables and pictures, and more.
This class starts on September 16 and will be held from 9 am to 12 pm on Tuesday & Thursdays. Cost is $75.00 15 Weeks

Certified Nursing Assistant Course
This 180 hour course is designed to prepare the student to be a Certified Nursing Assistant. Call the Farmington Adult Education Office at 778-3460 for an application, registration requirements, and placement on a waiting list. Details regarding dates, location, and fees will be provided to participants as the class fills. Cost is $1300.00

Introduction to Leadership and Management
This class is for the individual who is considering a move into a management position. This course will provide introductory training that includes the knowledge and management skills needed for success. Students will discuss the challenges facing leaders in today’s workplace. Completion of all activities is required to earn the 25 hour certificate. Class starts Monday September 29 from 1-3:30 pm. The cost is $40 for the 10 week class.

Spruce Mountain Adult Education is excited to offer many new classes for fall. Whether you are interested in learning technology, art journalizing, being a volunteer or getting in shape for the holidays, there is something for everyone. Read the following offerings and telephone the adult education office at 897-6384 for more information or to register for one of these classes.

Yoga for Health & Well Being – Learn Yoga Asunas to improve your musculoskeletal system and breathing for energy and renewal. All levels are welcome! Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat and blanket. Minimum of 10 students. Starts Sep. 23 – 6:30-7:45 pm. Cost: $75.00 8 weeks

Beacon Hospice Volunteer – Be the person who makes a difference! This 21-hour training course will prepare you to support patients and their families. Led by the volunteer coordinator, our team of RN care managers, licensed clinical social workers, clergy, and bereavement specialists will provide the informational tools you will need to provide compassionate support for our patients and their families. Hospice volunteer work is not about a patient’s demise, it is about their LIVING! Starts Sep. 25, 5:30-8:30 pm. Cost: $5.00 building use fee, 7 weeks.

Art Journaling – MediaArt is for everyone! Creating something with your own hands is a wondrous form of expression. Let your inner artist out today! Students will record their creative journey in an art journal, compiling their artistic endeavors into a book of their own making. You are invited to join this class for some fun through art exploration and creative expression. Minimum of 2 students.

Pickle Ball – Come learn the fastest growing paddle sport in America! Everything is provided! Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn and have fun!!! Starts Sep. 24 – 6-8 pm. Cost: $5.00 building use fee, 6 Weeks.

Woodworking – This class is designed to introduce people to basic machine woodworking. Students will have the opportunity to build a project and learn the safe and correct use of various woodworking machines. Starts Sep. 23 – 6-8 pm. Cost: $90.00 10 Weeks.

NRA’s Refuse To Be A Victim – This class addresses personal safety in and out of the home. Minimum of 10 students. Sep. 17 – 6-9 pm. Cost: $25.00 One class only

Intro to Computer Programming – Students will acquire the foundational knowledge and understanding needed for computer programming. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to enroll. Seth Pillsbury is an independent video game developer from Maine. Sep. 9 – 5:30-7 pm. Cost: $80.00 6 Weeks

Intro to Video Game Programming – Designed to give students the tools they need to create video games, including basic programming skills. The final project is to develop a simple computer game. Starts Sep. 9 – 7-8:30 pm. Cost: $80.00 6 Weeks.

TECHSMART – Learn Microsoft Office Suite. Ideal for the person wanting to learn or refresh keyboard and computer skills. Four sessions will be offered covering 5 topics. Session 1: Keyboarding – Learn the art of touch typing and enjoy the process of writing letters or e-mails without the headache of searching for the correct keys. Session 2: Microsoft Word – Learn how to understand the menu tabs and the basics of Word. Session 3: Microsoft Excel – Learn how to set up, design, and complete a spreadsheet using basic applications. Formulas, charts, and formatting spreadsheets will be emphasized. Session 4: PowerPoint and Publisher – PowerPoint has become the industry standard for efficient presentations. Microsoft Publisher is a program designed to aid you in designing your own calendars and cards. You may choose to take one or all four sessions. The first session is $30 and each additional session is $10. Starts Sept. 16 – 4-7 pm. 15 weeks

An Introduction to Systems Thinking – This workshop will introduce Systems Thinking/Systems Dynamics tools and concepts, using hands-on exercises and practical techniques. There will be opportunities for discussion to consolidate Systems Thinking learning and practice. Participants will develop knowledge of and skills in the use of Systems Thinking concepts and tools, and identify next steps for incorporating tools and skills effectively into curricula. Intermediate Excel – Take your Excel skills to the next level! Learn the mechanics of creating spreadsheets and completing graphs with Excel. Starts Sept. 18 – 3:30-5:30 pm. Cost $ 40 6 weeks.
