Stairway to Freedom Park in Strong awarded realtors’ grant

STRONG – The Stairway to Freedom Park in Strong recently received a donation from Mountains Council of Realtors. The park memorializes Sgt. Richard Parker, who was killed during his second tour of duty in Iraq in 2007. The 160 stairs leads to the playground and the Lance Corporal Scott Paul Park which memorializing a local veteran hero.

These two areas have been built with many local contributions and lots of volunteer hours over the years.

Gloria McGraw, president of the Realtors Association, presented the $1,500 award to Parker’s mother, Dixie Flagg and his sister Meghan Parker-Crockett. This grant is part of the work from National Realtor Association, Placemaking Grant program. The ideology is that these grants can foster healthier, more social and economically viable communities. It helps create places where people feel a strong stake in their neighborhoods and in making things better.

This grant will provide more playground equipment and a sandbox. There are picnic tables near the stream and easy access to ATV trails, great walking /hiking area and more.

“Realtors live, work and volunteer in our communities and take immense pride in working to improve them,” McGraw said. The Mountains Council represents realtors of Franklin County and parts of Somerset and Androscoggin counties.

Sgt. Parker’s family is enthusiastic about adding this contribution to their many other efforts, in recognizing his service and sacrifice.
