WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that $2.5 million in grants is now available for projects to educate new and under-served farmers about more than 20 Farm Service Agency programs that can provide financial, disaster or technical assistance to the agricultural community.

The grants will be awarded to nonprofits and public higher education institutions that develop proposals to improve farmer education on topics such as financial training, value-added production, record-keeping, property inheritance, and crop production practices.

USDA will conduct four evaluation periods to review applications, with the deadlines of Nov. 20; Jan. 22, 2016; Mar. 18, 2016; and May 27, 2016. Awards between $20,000 and $100,000 per applicant will be available.

  1. I’m sorry, I can’t imagine why you would invest in agriculture here. Wrong climate and too far from market hubs. Overhead of maintenance and transport to high. Maine is a industrial state, always has been. This area was founded in 19th century for its hydropower to run saw mills.

I’m also sick and tired of the appalling lack of knowledge in animal management and farm animal management. People think because its rural all you do is get a bunch of animals and voila you can be a wannabe farmer. The animals these pie in the sky types aquire and get in over their heads with SUFFER.

There is too much ignorance and logistics issues to ever make this area profitable.

Accept your fate. Look to the west where glamping is all the rage. Your asset is undisturbed nature and wildlife.
