Angus King visits Franklin County

Angus King, former Maine governor and candidate for senate, shakes hands outside the Homestead Bakery on Broadway this morning.

FARMINGTON - The former governor and a candidate for a U.S. senatorial seat spent the day in Franklin County Friday, touring the Wilton and Farmington downtown areas before heading north for a dinner in Rangeley.

Angus King, of Brunswick, is running as an independent for the senate seat currently held by Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, who has elected to not run again for her seat. Running against King is Republican Charlie Summers, the Maine secretary of state who lives in Scarborough, and Democrat Cynthia Dill, a state legislator from Cape Elizabeth. Other candidates include Danny Dalton, Stephen Woods and Andrew Dodge, all of whom are running as either independent or unenrolled candidates.

King said he spent the morning visiting businesses in Wilton, learning about the activity at the former Bass Mill and call centers as well as meeting small business owners in the downtown area. Following lunch at the Homestead Bakery with local residents, King planned a similar tour throughout the Farmington downtown.

"The best part of this is meeting people, particularly in small towns," King said. "You always learn something."

Adding that "Farmington looks great," King drew parallels between the busy downtown and other communities he had visited recently, such as Eastport and other small towns, where he said he was seeing signs of revitalization.

King's trip concluded in the northern part of the county Friday evening, with a dinner in the Rangeley area.

Angus King backs Obama for re-election,but that doesn't mean he'd caucus with Democrats.

  6. He will refuse to answer the question. But we all know he backs Obama.

  7. maine should be proud of having a true independent candidate to represent us.

  8. People can label themselves what ever they want, it's their actions that define them. Kings actions define Jim as a liberal.

  9. I am so glad for Angus King. I am so tired of both democrates and republicans. The outside ad against Angus really irks me. I hope King wins with a big margin and more independents step out and give voters a bigger choice.

  10. @ Hutch
King's actions only identify him as a liberal to a certain type of conservative.
I'm a liberal and he's a little conservative for my taste.
So it is a relative matter.
By running as an independent, King doesn't have to stick to a party line. He is the type of person who can build coalitions.
Though he isn't as liberal as I'd like, I'll probably vote for him because I believe he can be elected and I wouldn't want to take a chance of electing Summers.

  11. ETQ, if you are a liberal I highly recommend you vote your beliefs and I'm sure Dill represents those beliefs.

  12. Two things to think about:

The condition of this states budget when he got elected govenor.

The condition of this states budget when he left.

  13. Hard to believe but this guy will be more liberal than Olympia.

  14. Everyone needs to Think...what did the economy look like when King left office???? He is a democrat in disguise!!!! A true independent? Hardly!
