FARMINGTON – The Franklin County Animal Shelter is holding a “Grand Reopening” Thursday and Friday, Oct. 2 & 3, after a canine parvovirus outbreak was discovered earlier this month.

For the Grand Reopening’s Adoption Special, all cats and kittens will be free to adopt and all dogs and puppies will be $50 or less to adopt.

After three dogs were tested positive for the viral illness that affects dogs, with symptoms that include diarrhea, lack of appetite, vomiting and lethargy, the shelter was closed to the public on Sept. 3.

Since then, the shelter’s staff cleaned the facility with bleach to prevent the parvovirus from spreading. About 50 dogs were at the shelter when the outbreak was discovered.  The shelter has now been reopened and the animals are ready to be adopted.
