Archie’s takes over Jay curbside on Dec. 2 & 3

6 mins read

JAY – A private waste hauling company will be picking up the town’s curbside trash and recyclables starting in December. With the Thanksgiving break, that means the final day of town-operated curbside pickup will be Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Following the lead of an advisory vote by residents, the Board of Selectpersons moved earlier this month to hire Archie’s, out of Mexico, to handle the town’s curbside pickup. Eliminating two town positions and two trucks is expected to save the town approximately $250,000 annually, with $120,000 of that paying for Archie’s service. The town’s trucks will be sold to Archie’s for $105,000, mostly funding the service for the first year.

According to a notice sent to Jay addresses, Archie’s will be picking up Wednesday and Thursdays of each week, beginning at 5 a.m. Trash and recyclables may be placed curbside in the proper containers after 4 p.m.,  the previous day.

In the case of a holiday, Archie’s will pick up curbside trash the following day that week. Notices of holidays that impact trash pickup will be posted on the town’s website.

As of Dec. 1, any trash bags may be utilized by residents. Recycling is still mandatory, per town ordinance. The town will continue to sell clear bags for those that wish to use them, until the current supply is exhausted.

Also as of Dec. 1, all residents visiting the transfer station must speak with an attendant at the recycling building prior to unloading material. All recyclable material, universal waste, batteries, anti-freeze, used engine oil, electronic waste, freon containing devices, propane tanks and tires, is to be left at the recycling building. Only trash, clean and pressure-treated wood, brush, inert material (bricks, cement blocks), ashes and leaves will be deposited beyond the recycling building.

Residents are also required to display a “Jay Transfer Station” entry permit sticker on their vehicle. These stickers are free upon presentation of the resident’s registration. The stickers are designed to reduce the use of the facility by non-residents.

As previously reported, the transfer station will now be closed on Sunday and Monday. Operating hours will be 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays, and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. The one-day reduction is designed to reduce overtime pay and cut costs.

Two other elements of the notice are reminders, rather than new items. The first is a reminder that used clothing, bedding or stuffed animals cannot be accepted at the Share Shack. The second is that Jay Transfer Station is not licensed to accept hazardous waste, including most kinds of paint. Only latex paint in a hardened state will be accepted.

  1. One department down, Now we need to look at the budgets for the town office and highway department! We all know that compared to other towns we are seriously overstaffed in these departments. Nobody wants to see people lose their job however it is getting to the point where people are going to start losing their homes. Taxes have already gone up and that was before the layoffs at the mill even started. I hope the selectmen and town manager can put aside friendships and do what is best for the residents of Jay!

  2. The highway department has reduced their payroll quite a bit over the last few years. John gave a very good explanation a couple of meetings ago as to what his department does and what would happen if there were any more cuts. The school department is where the cuts need to be made. There is way to much money spent there.
They are still adding positions there when other departments are being cut back. The problem is that there is no chance to cut their budget other than turning down the total budget as the school board makes all the decisions with no input from a budget committee.
