FARMINGTON – The line up was impressive at the Heart of Maine Dairy Goat Show at the 174th Farmington Fair Saturday morning.
Nubian does posed and sauntered regally around Judge Katie Wolfe for her expert inspection. Walking around each goat, Wolf poked and stood back to carefully survey the milkers as their owners looked on. But for the rustle of chilly wind moving through the Worthley Arena, a respectful quiet prevailed.
Then Wolf pointed to a doe in the middle of the lineup. Her owner, Phil Cassette of Chateau Briant Farm in Saco, urged the milker from the line as Wolf noted overall that, “it was a nice class.” The futurity class winner’s posture, though, was what impressed her the most and Cassette was handed a trophy.
The opinions of the several breeds of goats waiting their turn from the barn across from the arena grew louder as the farmers returned to retrieve the next entries of the show.
On the last day of the week-long fair, the goat show will continue through the day. The midway opened early with the draft horse show will be followed by lawn mower and garden tractor pull – all going on in the pulling ring. The last session of pari-mutuel racing kicks off at 2 p.m. and the popular demolition derby starts tonight at 7 p.m. in front of the racetrack grandstand.
