We found the reported Black Skimmers this past week at Hill's Beach in Biddeford Pool. These unique birds have a lower mandible that is longer than the upper. They fly skimming the surface of the water with their lower mandible beneath the surface. When they sense a fish, their bill snaps shut, trapping their prey. (Steve Muise/Farmington)

  17. Steve – Black Skimmers and Little Blue Heron – in Maine, no less – great shots, great birds to see – never mind the stunning image of fog over Scarborough Marsh. And, thanks to all who remind us of, as the Muises say, the beauty in our own Maine “back-yard”.
