FARMINGTON – A 17-year-old bicyclist received minor injuries in a collision with a pick-up truck on Wilton Road Monday morning.

According to Officer Derrick Doucette of the Farmington Police Department, a 17-year-old Wilton girl was riding west on Wilton Road when the bicycle suddenly veered into the left westbound lane as a pick-up truck was attempting to pass it. The accident occurred in front of the Franklin-Somerset Federal Credit Union at 485 Wilton Road.

The Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Stuart Allen, 51, with passenger Juanita Allen, both of Jay, was also headed west on Wilton Road when it came up to the bicyclist, who was not named because she is a juvenile, Doucette said, as she was riding in the right lane.

Witnesses said just as the truck moved into the left lane to pass the bicyclist, the bicycle’s front tire cut in front of the passing truck, Doucette said.

Emergency crews were called at 11:22 a.m. Two lanes on Wilton Road remained opened with little traffic backup.

The girl received non-life threatening injuries, Doucette said. NorthStar EMS ambulance personnel and Farmington Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.

  1. just to let everyone know the 17 year old is my daughter. she is fine just has a bruised knee….she normally is very careful riding her bike but she thinks she might of had a seizure since they have been happening more often then usual….

  2. Thank God she’s ok, wishing her a quick recovery.
I wish there were sidewalks through there (I know bikes are not allowed on sidewalks but make them wide enough to accommodate), there really are a lot of bicycles and pedestrians who need a safe place to walk! Maybe when we redo the road out through there this could be an option? I see people walking with children in the road with some close calls, It makes me cringe.

  3. kim i glad that your daughter is ok i was over as faar as i could go without hitting on coming traffic i was hoping i got by her but if i would have it may have turned out worse becuse there was a lot of traffic behind me again im sorry what happened and im glad shes ok

  4. Will be praying. So glad Stephie is okay. Love to you Stephie. Praying you will be able to start school Wednesday.

  5. I hope everyone is still doing ok! This stretch of road is treacherous for bikers and walkers, I bike quite a bit but avoid this particular road at all costs because I dont feel safe on it. It would be awesome to be able to have people walk/bike on it free from danger!

  6. stuartallen i know u did what u could of…. she fine… i have talked to one of the women that was on seen she is a good friend of mine and she believes my daughter had a seizure that caused her to swerve into u….

  7. Really glad to hear the young lady is OK– I know Stubby Allen, I m sure he would have felt terrible if anything happened to her.

Best wishes and get well soon to everyone involved.

  8. BTW I used to live in Europe where we used bikes to get around a lot. We were lucky enough to have access to designated bike lanes. I don’t feel comfortable biking on roads like this one here because there just isn’t enough shoulder/breakdown lane to ride in or use to create extra buffer room between you and cars. Stuff happens, blow out a tire, rough pavement grabs the wheel, hit sand too fast–lots of things can happen to cause you too suddenly loose control of the bike/swerve/fall over/ over handle bars etc —at least if you are riding on roads with more room on the sides—better chances you will not end up in the path of a on coming car.

  9. I was right be hide the truck and came to a skidding stop about 3 feet from the girl, I am so glad to hear that she is ok. To see her get hit and go down like she did and be ok is short of a miracle, I thank God that it was not worse. God Bless you

  10. Karen, not sidewalks, but bike lanes, a widening of the road, with a white stripe setting it apart. Then it can be plowed along with the roadway in winter, and ridden with bicycles, motorized wheelchairs etc, and pedestrians. We have a growing population of people who walk along there. From town, all the way to FMH. I wish.

  11. Some how Maine has gotten credit for being bicycle friendly. Portland seems to be and kudos for the Whistle Stop trail. We need bike lanes for commuters and shoppers. Karen has a good idea with the suggestion that bike/walking lanes be considered when the road is re-built.
Glad that the young lady is okay and the Stuart Allen was able to respond as he did.

  12. Although I’m very sorry to read that this young lady was hit, I’m thankful that she wasn’t hurt. And I’ve got to say that the responses from everyone, especially her mother and the gentleman that was driving the truck, are heartwarming. So many times our neighbors post snarky comments which only go to shallowness. All of your comments however prove what I’ve always believed, that our community is comprised of caring, kind people with good core values. And kudos to those supporting improved bike/walking areas. Now that college is back in session I’ll pass young people every day walking from town to Hannaford or beyond.
Again, glad to hear the young lady is doing well.

  13. Very thankfully this event turned out well.

This is a prime example it is time to plan and implement a sidewalk and bike path from Farmington to Wilton on the Wilton road. Safety, health, and the economy would both improve by having a safe way to connect the towns to the hospital and businesses. The bike lane and sidewalk north of Farmington on 27 and 4 have been a great success!

What and how can we make this happen before the road is repaved?
