Big crowd turns out for Independence Day parade in Farmington

2 mins read
Under sunny skies, a good-sized crowd lined the streets downtown to see the Rotary Club's annual Fourth of July Parade in Farmington. The 45-minute parade featured plenty of floats, tractors, organizations, animals and fire engines. Bagpipers lead by Bob Underwood, at center right, provided music along the route. Underwood's grandson, Aiden Underwood is at left.
Farmington native and opera superstar, Lillian Nordica played by Deb Mason of Wilton, made a special appearance at the Farmington parade on the 100th anniversary of her final visit and concert in her hometown of Farmington in 1911.
Appearing for the first time at the Farmington Fourth of July parade, the Smiling Goat Precision Juggling Corps wowed the crowd with their skill, technique and, well, precision.

Riding on the first prize-winning float celebrating the Farmington Grange is Abby Marble as a strawberry.
With Abby Marble, from left, are bee Megan Marble and sunflower Katlyn Marble.
A Flash Mob suddenly erupted on Main Street during the parade when several people jumped off the sidewalks near the front of the parade and began dancing.

  2. Wish I was there to enjoy it all. I would like to show my wife all the festivities but it was back to work in Alaska

  3. Thank you for hosting such a terrific parade. The weather cooperated and everyone seemed to have a great time. Good community spirit was shown by all.

  4. Thank you to the good people of Farmington for the warm reception and smiles all along the parade route! A big special thank you to my dear friend Jane Parker for her invaluable assistance with La Nordica’s costume and borrowed spear and my “chariot driver”, John Anderson and his Model T. I could not have had a better way to travel. It was indeed a pleasure to play the illustrious Lillan Nordica and wear that wonderful 100+ year old costume, I could almost feel her presence (or it might have been the sun reflecting off the chain mail and helmet) once I slipped it on. I bid my friends and fans a fond farewell now as I leave Maine for Georgia’s southern soil and wanted to say what an honor it has been to call Franklin County my home for the last 13 years. I have enjoyed being a part of the Sandy River Players and WordPlay theater and appreciated the great audiences we had for our shows.

Warmest regards to all and God Bless!

  5. The parade was wonderful, but I would like to tell the organizers that allowing the waterguns should be reconsidered in the future. My 3 year old was doused in the face and it really upset her. Other viewers that I spoke to were not really impressed with allowing this either. Perhaps at least give a bit of a warning so that we could view the parade from a safer distance. Thank-you.

  6. Thank you to everyone who took part in yesterday’s parade! It was a wonderful event.

  7. I am sorry that I missed the Parade and the- Smiling Goat Precision Juggling Corps, maybe next year?

  8. To Matt,

Please know that the organizers were unaware of the use of waterguns, and are very sorry this happened. We will do our best to prevent this in the future.

  9. To Matt,

I agree with the waterguns. I saw one of the kids spray an elderly man who must have been near 85 years old. That shouldn’t happen.

  10. Lovin’ the sunflower, bee and strawberry!! And to all those people that thought the strawberry was a watermelon, watermelons don’t have stems coming out of there heads!!!
