Blasting at North Jay quarry expected Monday

JAY – The director of operations for Polycor has advised town officials that they will be doing some blasting at the North Jay quarry on Monday, March 2. Residents should expect one or two blasts in the morning.

“Polycor has stated in the past that blasting is not part of their normal process. However, there would be some amount necessary in preparing the site and the road,” said Jay Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere in an email on Sunday.

Polycor Director Kevin Jack explained that this is necessary to the development of the quarry.

“He indicated that the blasting company they are contracting with has received their state permits and that he just found out that they were going to be on site Monday morning. They anticipate one or two blasts that will take place Monday morning on the top of the quarry,” LaFreniere said.

Earlier this month, Polycor Inc., a Canadian company proposing the North Jay White Project development, intends to reactivate the quarry and curbing plant this year, located off the Old Jay Hill Road. The project’s ultimate approval to become fully operational will likely rest with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection.

Polycor Inc., representatives told the Board of Selectpersons at their Feb. 9 meeting that the $4 million project is expected to create 20 jobs in the short term, as well as another 20 jobs indirectly.

Selectpersons discussed the possibility of a future meeting with the company to develop some sort of payment plan to cover potential maintenance of Old Jay Hill Road, in exchange for not posting the typical weight limit.
