JAY – The North Jay Water District has put out a boil water order for those customers whose water service was interrupted early Saturday morning when a water main broke on Route 4.
According to Ronald J. Moreau, water district treasurer, “the water line broke very early Saturday morning and it was a major break.” The break occurred on Route 4 in front of the North Jay Fire Station, next to the library.
The boil water order remains in effect until the break is fixed and the water comes back on.
“Only the customers who lost water need to boil it. A crew is currently working on the repairs and hope to have the water back on soon,” Moreau said.
Once water returns, the district is required to bring samples to a laboratory in Augusta to be tested for E.coli and coliform bacteria. The district will make an announcement when customers can stop boiling water.
North Jay Water District Superintendent Mike Wells said affected customers should boil water for one minute. That includes water that they plan to drink, use to brush their teeth and make ice cubes. After the water is boiled, it can be put in the refrigerator.
The district has started construction to replace the aging water main on Smith Avenue that’s been the source of chronic breaks requiring affected customers to boil water orders over the past year.
Thank you for getting the water back on. And with smiles and waves .
This is the exact spot there was a failure a few years ago. Didn’t get it right then?
