FARMINGTON – Two Lisbon residents and one man from Lewiston were indicted on felony burglary and associated charges by the Franklin County Grand Jury Thursday, for the alleged taking of firearms from a Rangeley residence.

Indicted on charges connected with the alleged burglary is Danielle Nelson, 25 of Lisbon, Kevin O’Donnell 25 of Lisbon, and Steven Sharpley, 21 of Lewiston. All three face charges of theft of a firearm and burglary, both Class B felonies, as well as a misdemeanor charge of stealing drugs. Additionally, Nelson faces a charge of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a Class C felony, and O’Donnell has been indicted on one count of violating the conditions of his release, a misdemeanor.

As previously reported by Rangeley Police Chief Dennis Leahy, Nelson had lived with the alleged victim of the burglary, a Rangeley man, for some time and had split up April 3. They loaded up her belongings in a truck and drove to O’Donnell’s residence in Lisbon.

The next day on Saturday, the Rangeley resident got a call from Nelson, Leahy said, “and she says, ‘you still have some of my stuff.'” They agreed to meet at the Auburn Mall, but when the Rangeley man got there, Nelson didn’t show up.

When the complainant returned to his home, he discovered three rifles and one loaded .40-caliber handgun were missing, as were two big, flat screen TVs, a Sony PlayStation console and a significant amount of medicinal marijuana taken from his safe. He called the Rangeley Police Department Saturday night.

Police were able to trace Nelson’s location from a cell phone to the Motel 6 in Lewiston, Leahy said. The Lewiston Police Department was notified. O’Donnell was known the local department and wanted on felony arrest warrants out of Androscoggin and Kennebec counties.

Lewiston police entered the motel room and arrested Nelson and O’Donnell. Leahy interviewed the pair at the Lewiston police station where “she confessed,” Leahy said, and named Sharpley as the person who drove them up to Rangeley to steal the items.

Leahy and local police arrived at Sharpley’s residence and “found him in bed and arrested him.” Sharpley then led police to his mother’s house in Lewiston where the guns were found stashed, Leahy said.

A grand jury indictment indicates that the panel believes there is probable cause, or a “reasonable belief” that the crime occurred. A grand jury of up to 23 people need not be unanimous or convinced beyond a reasonable doubt, unlike a regular trial jury.
