FARMINGTON – Franklin County 4-H Camp was held June 24-27, from 6-8pm each evening at the Fairbanks School Meeting House. The Camp was open to all youth ages 5-12.
Doris Gay, 4-H volunteer, planned the weeks activities and centered them around the 100th year celebration of the 4-H program here in Maine.
To start the event, themed “Let’s celebrate,” birthdays of all participants were celebrated with cake and ice cream and each one made their own pinata. Participants also learned how to celebrate their communities by being good citizens. All were invited to take part in a community service project by providing items for a “Giving Basket” which will be donated to a local food pantry.
As a special treat, two 4-H alumni guest speakers were invited to attend during the week and talk with the group about their experiences and memories as 4-H members in the Fairbanks “Skillful Workers” 4-H club. Marge Taylor brought her 4-H scrapbook to share which showed pictures taken at club meetings that she had attended as well as some of her projects. On the third night of Camp, Cindy Kemble visited with the group and brought two of her favorite woodworking projects that she had done when she was in 4-H. She also shared about an exchange trip that she took to Michigan as a 4-H member. Camp participants enjoyed hearing the stories from the speakers and were given opportunity to ask questions.
Games refreshments and crafts were also part of each evenings activities. Songs from the Maine 4-H Song Book were sung as well. Pictured are participants with their pinatas. Those attending were Denae Greenlaw, Rose Erin Greenlaw, Shawna Greenlaw, Amanda Greenlaw, Mia Willingham, Grace Willingham, Alexis Meisner, Amberleah Smith, and Matt Smith.

I have such warm memories of the Skillful Workers. Doris was always there to offer her assistance while her mother Helen was showing us how to do different things. I always reflect back on different things that they each taught me. The Skillful Workers will always be a big part of my past. I look forward to sharing the things that I learnt at the hands of the entire Gay family with my Granddaughters.
Tolman, Helen and Doris Gay were not only great role models but were also great neighbors.
