FARMINGTON – A rear-end collision on the Wilton Road sent a local woman to the hospital today, after police say her vehicle was struck while she waited to turn into a bank.

According to Farmington Police Officer Michael Lyman, the operator of a 1999 black Jeep Cherokee was northbound on the Wilton Road when it stopped to turn left into the Franklin-Somerset Federal Credit Union. At that point, Lyman said, it was struck from behind by a 1992 Jeep Wrangler.

The operator of the Cherokee, Allison Pond, 28 of Farmington, was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar EMS with unspecified injury, while the operator of the Wrangler, Maxwell Wright, 16 of Weld, was unhurt in the collision.

Both vehicles, Lyman said, were totaled and towed from the scene. No charges are expected to be filed.

Farmington Fire Rescue maintained traffic control around the crash scene, which reduced the Wilton Road to two lanes at approximately 3:30 p.m..

  1. You have it right Farmingtonite! Center turn lane would make the road much safer.

  2. Everybody’ has got to slow down and pay attention !!!! We can have 4 lanes on each side..and this will still happen!

  3. It’s very stressful driving that stretch of road every day to and fro from work! I try to remember every day to thank god for getting me to work and home safe! Please pay attention, and USE your blinker when turning and shut it off if you are not!!!! PLEASE!!!!

  4. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone says we need a center turning lane on this stretch. As it would be nice, we all know that this is most likely never going to happen. Instead keep right except to pass like the law states and you should be fine :)

  5. Yes driving requires one to pay attention to where your vehicle is going.
If your vehicle is rapidly approaching “anything”, you are to take appropriate action.
In this case that would have meant applying the brakes,,,,
Yeah a turning lane would be nice but,,,The simple fact is “if” drivers drive responsibly, things like this don’t happen.
IT’S NOT AN ACCIDENT IF YOU AREN’T LOOKING IN FRONT OF YOU…IT’S INEVITABLE THAT YOU “WILL” RUN. INTO SOMETHING.

  6. With the amount of traffic growing and the amount of busniess growing also. A turning lane is called for.
If, The person was in a turn lane it would not of happened. Any questions ?

  7. Please pay attention to what is happening ahead of you, beside you, and on the sides of the road. Slow down and leave enough room to avoid trouble or stop. Throw out the cell phone and radio knobs while in a high traffic section. It is the drivers responsibility to control their car! More turning lanes would help, but people will always make mistakes in traffic….or on a lonely stretch of road……Its up to the driver to be in Control of their vehicle!

  8. The true bottom line is people need to pay attention while driving. Put away the cellphones and if you have to turn the radio off. It amazes me the people who are distracted while driving everyday when I travel through to go to work and to drive home. Between the distracted driving and the speeding it’s a wonder there isn’t more accidents. I have seen many close calls through this stretch of road.

On the contrary, turning lanes are good and bad. I believe they can cause quite a bit of confusion but it may help a lot from walmart to subway. Or maybe Pizza Hut to subway. However, what is the cost of doing so?

  9. The boy was 16. Driver inexperience and inattention. I’m glad it wasn’t a more serious accident. I put my blinker on way in advance of a left hand turn (and pump the brakes) on that road and still feel like I’m taking my life in my hands every time. Numerous close calls even with loads of caution. It takes work to get the people behind you to notice you are going to stop/turn.

  10. How do you know this would not have happened if there had been a turning lane?
PEOPLE get rear ended in turning lanes all the time..(McDonald’s/front street……to name only one)

If someone isn’t looking ahead….it could be an elephant that gets run into. (hey,,,,,you won’t believe this but I just hit an elephant,,,,I GOTTA CALL YA BACK!! ).
    Seriously….

  11. @ Jim. What if the person was drunk ? Or had a medical issue ? Do you really think that that turning lane would be safe and no one would get hurt ? Adding a turning lane would be nice but in reality it won’t happen, just because you are in a turn only lane does not make you safe . It is up to the other drivers around you to pay attention and keep your eyes on the road.

  12. I agree. Maine’s population of elephants is dwindling. It’s a proven fact, turning lanes save elephants.

  13. I am pleased to see that a lot of people are asking people that get behind the wheel of a car to pay attention. It seems that all too often we want something changed instead of people being responsible for their own actions. Driving a vehicle is a huge responsibility, and it seems we are forgetting that.

  14. Why wouldn’t charges be filed? At a minimum there would have to be some type of driver inattention/negligent driving on the operator of the vehicle that ran into the rear end of the turning vehicle.

  15. No matter the age…..an accident is an accident. People shouldn’t be judging the situation of a news article. We are all human and I haven’t met a perfect one yet. Love Nate ‘ s sense of humor!

  16. Three driving tips. Eyes on the road. Hands on the wheel. Cell phones in the trunk. Here’s a fourth. Use your turn signals!! It’s not that hard.

  17. I don’t understand people who always blame age/inexperience. Do you realize that the majority of accidents do not involve young/inexperienced drivers, but rather 30-40 year olds? There is nothing in this article that indicates to me that age/inexperience was the concern or issue so why assume such?

  18. Why, when something like this happens, is everyone so quick to place blame and/or judgment? The reality of it is, things like this happen! I consider myself a decent driver, but about 7 years ago, one second of distraction caused me to rear end someone. Things happen! We should stop placing blame and judgment, and stop with the “what ifs” and the “this needs to be dones” and be thankful neither of these drivers were hurt!

  19. the driver did have her turning signal on. this happens it sucks and is painful but it happened what should be noticed is that neither were seriosly hurt during THE ACCIDENT not that age or experience were there. sometimes i wish they wouldnt use names and ages in these then the facts would be looked at.

  20. The insurance companies wild decide fault for recovering damages, medical bills, etc. But there is no need to file “charges” because no laws were broken. It was just an accident. Just saying…

  21. Unless there were cameras on BOTH vehicles, we only have the individual drivers’ viewpoints.

  22. While a turning lane MIGHT be beneficial, Drivers need to pay attention more, and clearly communicate their intent i.e. blinkers and follow through on their intent even after they have changed their mind. I realize and understand that not everyone gets out and checks their blinkers prior to leaving their driveway.

Attention to surroundings and Communication would go along way towards making our roads safer.
