FARMINGTON – Approximately 50 members of the Franklin County and Somerset County Sheriff’s Office were jointly sworn in Thursday, in an effort to allow for greater cooperation between the law enforcement agencies.

Sheriff offices across the state are required to swear in deputies and other staff members every three years. This is the second time that the sheriffs of Somerset and Franklin County have opted to jointly swear in their officers, allowing them to police both counties when necessary. Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols and then-Somerset County Sheriff Barry DeLong conducted the first ceremony in East Madison in 2014.

Somerset and Franklin County share a long and predominantly rural border. Oftentimes, the closest responding unit or backup units will include deputies from the neighboring county. Additionally, deputies patrolling some roads, such as Route 27 north of New Vineyard, will repeatedly pass through both counties.

Jointly swearing in the deputies and having the two offices cooperate allowed for a safer region, Nichols said. “We’re a team,” he said of the relationship between Somerset and Franklin County.

“It’s good we work collaboratively to accomplish our mission,” Lancaster said.

Thursday, Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster and Nichols appeared with their deputies and other staff members at the FCSO office building in Farmington. Deputies were sworn in by Dedimus Justices representing both offices and the sheriffs conducted inspections of personnel and vehicles.
