FARMINGTON – You know that fancy-schmancy outfit you once wore to your prom that never again saw the light of day?
Well, it’s time to take them out from the back of your closet and get some really good use out of them by donating them to Mt. Blue High School’s second annual Dress for Less event.
Here’s how it works: You drop off that gown or tux you looked so gorgeous wearing once at the front office at the high school.
Then, at two fittings scheduled for March 5 and April 14, seniors who are attending the prom and are interested in finding a super great deal on some very cool clothes, can try on the formal wear to find that perfect ensemble. Some shoes, and other accessories are available.
This is the second year high school staff members Patty Schoen and Betsy Brady are putting on the Dress for Less event. Schoen was inspired from a similar event held at Spruce Mountain High School.
“Dress for Less is the Mt. Blue community’s way of removing the obstacle of cost for students who want or need to be thrifty,” Schoen said. Any proceeds from the special sale will go toward next year’s cleaning bill for clothes and the event’s other expenses, such as adding a few accessories.
In a teachers room on the second floor of the school, several shapes, styles and sizes of sparkly gowns and chiffon dresses, one of bright blue and another of white satin, float on hangers from a circular rack. Schoen and Brady are hoping for more prom-wear-appropriate donations of gently worn dresses and formal men’s wear, so the guys can get some good deals too.
Last year, the first year Dress for Less was offered, four students picked the dress of their dreams and “they had so much fun trying them on,” Brady said. The organizers are hoping to expand the collection and involve more students this year.
Students finding something during the March 5 fitting session can participate in the annual prom fashion show to be held March 21. The senior prom is set for May 16.
Donations can be dropped of at the front office at Mt. Blue High School before 3 p.m. each weekday. For more information, contact Schoen or Brady at 778-3561 or bbrady@mtbluersd.org or pschoen@mtbluersd.org.
What a wonderful idea! Thanks, Patty and Betsy for organizing this!
I noticed the Touch of Class in the Jay plaza had some very pretty wedding and prom dresses a couple weeks ago. They were very pretty. Yes, this is an excellent idea.
This is a great idea! Hopefully some plus sized dressed will be donated for those girls who aren’t quite so small. They should be able to enjoy as well.
