EAST DIXFIELD – The state’s Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating an early morning blaze that destroyed a vacant house and an attached garage on Route 2.
A motorist passing by the single story home called emergency dispatch to report that the structure was on fire. Fire departments from the towns of East Dixfield, Jay and Wilton got the call at 2:51 a.m. Saturday, said Wilton Fire Chief Sonny Dunham.
The house at 1009 Route 2 East was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Twenty-eight fire fighters responded to the call.
“There wasn’t much we could do,” Dunham said after arriving on scene. The home, located between R.S. Osgoods & Sons and Hall Farms on Route 2, was vacant. The property’s owner’s name was not available on Saturday.
Kenneth McMaster of the Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene Saturday to investigate the cause of the blaze. Fire fighters returned to check for hot spots and aid in the investigation, Dunham said.
