‘Elder Check’ provides check-ins for senior citizens

1 min read

FARMINGTON – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department has announced the creation of a new program designed to provide another layer of protection for senior citizens living alone and unassisted in rural parts of the county.

Named “Elder Check,” the program will feature intermittent welfare checks from FCSD deputies to the homes of senior citizens living without assistance in rural Franklin County communities that do not have access to a local police department.

“The idea is to ensure that our seniors are not being taken advantage of by scam artists,” said Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. in a statement released Friday that listed Elder Check’s advantages. “That their medications are not being stolen and are located in a safe place, that their home is properly secured for their own safety and that they are not being used or abused by family members or friends.”

The program is voluntary and available to senior citizens in rural areas of the county that are not serviced by a local police department. Those that either could benefit from a weekly visit by members of the FCSD or know someone else who could may contact the sheriff’s department at 778-2680 or 1-800-773-2680.

  7. What a wonderful initiative! Knowing the prevalence of elder abuse here in Maine, I am thrilled to know that the FCSO is looking for preventative ways to mitigate the issue. We are such a fortunate community. :)
