FARMINGTON – Farmington Emblem Club members arrived with two gallons of buttons and a willingness to donate their time towards a bracelet project aimed at helping children in a homeless shelter.
On Monday, Peggy Alexander, Diana Oliver, Shannon Smith and Debbie Holt gathered around a long table and went right to work sewing buttons to elastic bands for Buttons for Babes, a local fund-raising project started last summer by Chris Bourassa.
The United Way of the Tri-Valley has taken the project under its wing and, with a match by Barclays of a dollar for each dollar raised by the bracelets, more than $7,000 has been raised so far. All of the proceeds go directly to help children in crisis living in the greater Franklin County area, or who are seeking shelter at Rumford Group Homes.
With a donation of between $5 and $10, depending on the complexity of special bracelet designs requested, the bracelets are appearing on more and more wrists.
With the needs of youths on the rise, as is the demand for the bracelets, Smith of Wilton, Emblem Club 460’s current president, decided to make this a project of the club’s many causes.
Besides the bracelet making and a lot of giggling going on during the sewing session, Smith’s group brought two gallon jugs filled to the brim with buttons. Buttons that will make many more bracelets.
The Emblem Club will also be making a financial donation towards the bracelet project’s cause too, Smith said.
