FARMINGTON – FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) recently invited the Sunny Side Up team to the World Festival held April 25 through April 29 based on their performance over the past three years.
At the start of the season, 20,000 teams around the world began working on this year’s Food Factor challenge. The season culminates with 85 teams representing 40 countries that will gather at the Edward Jones Dome, home of the St. Louis Rams. This year’s Coopertition is expected to draw 30,000 spectators and participants.
For the ultimate Sport for the Mind, FIRST, brings together three separate robotics competitions. The high-tech spectator events combine the excitement of sport with science and technology. They will showcase the results of months of intense preparation, competing in thrilling matches and working on their robots in the “Pits.” The event is a world celebration of this year’s challenge, the Food Factor. The Coopertition is on robot design and performance utilizing an originally designed and programmed autonomous Lego robot created by each team that uniquely solves challenges. The other requirement is an original research component and solution. This year the Sunny Side Up team focused on Food Safety and how the early detection of Salmonella in eggs could save lives.
The Core Values for FIRST are the cornerstones of the FLL program. They are among the fundamental elements that distinguish FLL from other programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals.
“They learn helping one another is the foundation of teamwork at a Coopertition, while acting with gracious professionalism,” said team coach Jan Roberts. The team motto is “All of us are better than one of us.”
Team Members are Ben Andrews, Grace Andrews, James Guillaume, Mitchell Guillaume, Thomas Marshall, Alex Morrell, Nicole Pires, and Dylan Roberts. Six out of the eight team members are able to attend this event and they are extremely proud and excited to be found worthy to attend this prestigious learning Coopertition. Earning a spot out of the 85 teams invited from over 61 countries is really exciting! They are busily preparing for the event.
The team has a very short time to raise funding for this event and is asking for your donations to help them compete in St. Louis. All donations may be sent to the Franklin Savings Bank attention Lego Robotics Team.
