FARMINGTON – Police have made an arrest in relation to two burglaries that targeted the Care & Share Food Closet this week, taking a local man into custody on a warrant.

Evan McArthur, 23 of Farmington, was taken into custody at 4 p.m. Thursday, after police executed search and arrest warrants at a property located on the Fairbanks Road. The Care & Share Food Closet, which supplies food to Farmington, New Sharon, Chesterville, Temple, New Vineyard and New Portland, is located at 508 Fairbanks Road. It is open weekdays, from noon until 2 p.m.

According to Farmington Police Chief Jack Peck, the pantry had been targeted in the early morning hours of May 22 and May 25, with the thief taking food items. During the latter incident, at approximately 5 a.m., FPD Officer Justin Blais and Officer Adam Welch with University of Maine at Farmington Public Safety noticed an individual walking in the area around the food pantry.

Blais saw the man walking toward the building, Peck said, and approached on foot to find the rear door of the food pantry partially open. Blais requested other law enforcement officers to respond and then saw an individual inside the building through a window. The individual, who was wearing a ski mask, noticed Blais and fled from the building and into the nearby woods.

As part of the investigation, Peck said, a search warrant was issued for a residence on the Fairbanks Road, where some of the allegedly stolen items were located. An arrest warrant for the burglaries was then issued for McArthur, who was taken into custody Thursday.

  1. Stealing food from a food bank makes no sense. The guy could have just asked for it. People confuse me.

  2. How about getting a job and paying for food instead of stealing it from people who really need it. He should be made to volunteer at the food closet as restitution.

  3. I agree with Karen….seems very sad……..food pantries help people in need……maybe things are not what they seem??

  4. Hungry. Foodbank has requirements. We know this could have very well been a different kind of story. It is really hard to get work here.
Been trying for two years. Career center. Newspapers. Store signs. have to be exactly what they are looking for.

  5. I have worked in the Farmington Area now for over 30 years and have never found it hard to find a job. This young man’s facebook page says he is currently working so that can’t be the excuse for him. And as far as I know, McDonalds and other places like it are always hiring. And yes, I have worked at McDonalds and it is not a bad place to be — it pays the bills!
