FARMINGTON – Students at Smart Fun Learning Adventures recently took home the state trophy for their work as a robotics team at a competition in Augusta.

SFLA is a faith-based, pre-kindergarten through eighth grade private school located on the Fairbanks Road. The Smart Fun Robotics Team has been together since kindergarten, adding a handful of newcomers along the way. They began competing as a team four years ago but took home first place this year for the first time. The nine-person team was up against 43 other teams across the state and will be heading to Detroit this spring for the World Festival.

Team members said they worked on their robot, Stan Lee, two days a week and basically as often as they could. The competition involved missions that Stan Lee was required to complete within a certain time frame, as well as a project that the team had to put together. They were also scored on “core values” such as their ability to work as a team and encourage others.

“As a team they’re excited about the winning, but as a coach it was exciting to watch them work together. It was neat to see all the time and attention that they’ve put in pay off,” co-coach and SFLA director Sheena Thomas said

Stan Lee was affectionally named after the creator of Marvel comic books who passed away this fall.

“He’s like the Hulk. He smashes a lot of things,” team member Amaya Thomas said.

The students said they enjoyed seeing Stan Lee perform his missions, while some of them favored presenting their project to judges.

“It’s been a great catalyst to learning bigger life lessons,” lead coach Monica Allen said.
