The traffic on Rt 2 didn’t seem to bother them at all. (Kelly Smith/Farmington) The American woodcock is a chunky, quail-sized bird. They like the woodlands and thickets. Makes them blend in well with their surroundings in the Wilton area. (Jim Knox/Wilton) Woodcocks like to eat earthworms. They extract them from the mud with their long bills. In the Wilton area. (Paula St. Germain/North Chesterville) This pileated woodpecker was easy to spot with its bright red cap in contrast with the drab remains of last year’s flora. (Jim Knox/Wilton) Nature’s art in Vienna (Donovan Buck/Belgrade) It’s a stretch to the feeder for this hungry squirrel. (Paula St. Germain/North Chesterville) During melting season you can find two worlds in the woods, one right side up and the other upside down. Hard to tell which is more magical. This was a first sighting for me. (© Jane Naliboff/Chesterville) It’s dating and mating season despite the snow, and these two hooded mergansers on the left are a couple, as well as the little guy on the right who only had eyes for the sweet young thing off to his left. From what I witnessed, there will be some adorable little mergansers in about 28 days. (© Jane Naliboff/Chesterville) These beautiful mallards have been spending all of their time together.
