PHILLIPS – A fast-moving fire destroyed a garage and spread to the nearby house, damaging it on Bridge Street Tuesday afternoon.

Homowner Paul Wilcox said he had been working on his lawn mower in the garage and then went inside the house.

“I heard a bang and went out to the garage,” he said. He looked inside the garage and saw it filling with smoke and something was on fire. He called for the fire department at 1:16 p.m.

Wilcox, who lives at the home with his wife Brenda Wilcox, watched as the fire quickly engulf the garage.

Two upstairs bedrooms and the attic were damaged by fire and the garage completely destroyed in a fire Tuesday in Phillips.

“Both sides of the garage were on fire,” he said. Then he noticed the side of his house, a short distance from the garage, started to catch fire.

“I tried to keep the garden hose on the house, but couldn’t keep it back,” Wilcox said. Deputy Sandy Burke of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, arrived on scene first and made sure no one else was inside and that the couple’s dog and cat made it outside. Brenda Wilcox was at work at the time.

Phillips and Strong fire departments arrived and worked to contain the blaze to the garage.

Fire could be seen on the exterior of the two bedrooms upstairs and was in the attic, Wilcox said. The extent of the damage had not been determined as of yet.
