AVON – A family and their friends are doing what they can to help after a fire heavily damaged one end of the home of Scott and Mary Wilcox on Friday morning.

No one was home when the fire got started but Scott Wilcox, after hearing on a fire fighter’s pager at work that it was his house burning,  was able to get home in time and save their dog, Buddy, and a few treasured items, Mary Wilcox said.

Fire fighters from Phillips, Strong and Salem responded to the call at 10:20 a.m. Friday. The fire was believed to have started as a chimney fire. A cinder may have fallen into the corner of the home  to ignite the structure. One end of the home was gutted and the other half received smoke damage.

On Saturday morning family members picked through the charred remains of the small two-story home at 242 Avon Valley Road.

The Wilcox couple had just made the final house payment on it but they didn’t have insurance.

“We want to try and rebuild it,” Mary Wilcox said, “try to save the house. We have a lot of memories in the house; we raised our children here.”

Help for the Wilcox family would be greatly appreciated. Donations may be mailed to: 242 Avon Valley Road, Avon, ME 04966.
