More than two dozen participated in the 4th Annual Fishing Derby for adults with developmental disabilities held Tuesday.

FARMINGTON – More than two dozen people participated in the 4th Annual Fishing Derby for adults with developmental disabilities held at Rollo Pond in Farmington today.

The annual event, hosted by the Farmington Recreation Department and sponsored by Coca-Cola Bottling of Farmington, proved successful for many participants who hooked one and sometimes two trout. The fishing derby was attended by many area adults who came for the opportunity reserved especially for them and at no cost.

Each time a fish was hooked a whoop went up among the crowd standing around the pond. Those who successfully reeled in a trout got a round of applause.

“They’re catching fish,” exclaimed Recreation Department director, Steve Shible. “That’s pretty important.” He added the derby in the past hasn’t always been as successful as today when it comes to reeling them in.

Several volunteers helped cast, when needed, net and detach hooks from the trout caught. LEAP, Inc. of Farmington provided a number of fishing poles so everyone got to try their luck.

The derby was held for one hour or when a limit of 30 fish were caught. Starting at 8 a.m. on the Fourth of July, the Flagg Family Fishing Derby will be held for children ages 3 to 10 and ends at 9 a.m. For more details on that derby, click here.

  2. Nice job Hunter. We are very proud of the way you helped out. I popped in to check on Hunter and all that one could see was smiles and fish being held up to show off. Great event for those who might seldom get the chance to go fishing.

  3. Way to go Hunter. sure is great to see a young man showing respect, towards his fellow man.

  4. I am so glad these people got to catch fish. The smiles on their faces are worth more than a million dollars. We need more things like this for the disable here in town, they have so few things for them and this is always great for their self-esteem. Our daughter Amanda won the derby a couple of years ago and was so proud of the fish she caught and couldn’t wait to eat it when she got home.

Thanks all who volunteer to help out during this and especially those who helped sponsor this and anything else for these people. They really are all very special people.

    Steve

  5. To Steve:
What do you mean “these people” the disabled residents of franklin county are no different than the residents who arent disabled not trying to crab at you or anything but talking that way isnt nice. Just sayin
