FARMINGTON – The installation of 1,007 American flags at veterans’ graves in Farmington’s cemeteries is underway in preparation for the Memorial Day events coming up.

American Legion members of the Roderick-Crosby Post 28 began straightening the military grave markers  and placing new U.S. flags at noon on Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery. About 600 of the new U.S. flags will be placed at the town’s two largest cemeteries-Fairview Cemetery and across Farmington Falls Road at Riverside Cemetery.

Veteran coordinator Pete Tracy said there are about 20 cemeteries in Farmington, but not all of them contain the graves of veterans.

The town provides funds for the new flags each year to be placed in town-owned cemeteries.

Area towns will be holding  Memorial Day  observances.

In Wilton, the event will be held on Sunday afternoon, May 29, at the monument on Main Street. Details, including a start time will be announced closer to the date. In Farmington,  Post 28 holds events including a parade on Memorial Day, as does Jay.
