Buses will be once more rolling down Franklin County roads next week, as schools reopen for the 2015-16 year. [Editor’s Note: Bus routes can be found at the bottom of the page]
District superintendents reported new renovations, new educational initiatives and new staff members, but few major shifts in scheduling or the academic calendar. Professional development and staff training workshops will lead an Aug. 31 opening day in all five districts, as custodians and support staff put the finishing touches on the school buildings and grounds.
“I think we’re ready,” Spruce Mountain School School district Superintendent Kenneth Healey said.
Districts send most students back to school on Monday, Aug. 31. MSAD 58, Flagstaff School District and Mt. Blue Regional School District will send grades 10, 11 and 12 to school on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
MSAD 58 will start its expanded pre-Kindergarten program on Sept. 8. At the budget meeting in June, residents approved creating 16-student programs at Kingfield, Strong and Phillips, with the Phillips pre-K working with a preexisting Head Start program. Those programs provide classes two days a week.
It is Superintendent Susan Pratt’s first school year as the district’s top administrator. Following an at-times turbulent summer that saw a number of teachers and most of the administrators leave the district, Pratt said that she felt there was a “great deal of positive energy” as the staff and community moved ahead into a new future. Tuesday’s new staff orientation event drew approximately 25 people, Pratt said.
“I am so very pleased to see everyone excitement as they make their preparations for the new school year,” Pratt said.
The district is fully-staff with a couple positions currently filled with long-term substitutes, Pratt said. Among these is the high school chemistry position, something that Pratt chalks up to the shortage of science teachers across the state.
As is the case with most districts across the state, MSAD 58 will be moving ahead with standards-based learning and the development of proficiency-based diplomas as required by state law. Schools would be setting learning goals and review data to gauge progress, Pratt said.
Mt. Blue Regional School District is also continuing to move toward the state-mandated proficiency-based diplomas. In the shorter term, additional staff and a reorganized day treatment program are being employed to improve special education in the district. Mt. Blue intends to begin billing the state for student treatment this year, Superintendent Thomas Ward said, in an effort to bring in additional revenue to reduce the impact of special education on the local budget.
Meanwhile, four new classrooms have opened at Mt. Blue Middle School to accommodate additional students. Those classrooms are located in the former central office section of the middle school, with central office moving to the second floor of the Mt. Blue Campus.
“We’re very excited, and very pleased that the middle school has four more classrooms,” Ward said. The move to the high school had gone “very smoothly,” Ward said.
The district is conducting professional development workshops ahead of the Aug. 31 start of school. It will continue late-arrival Wednesdays, which replaced early-release Wednesdays last year.
Ward said that the district had several new hires and believed that it had “strong people” in position to help students succeed. “It is going to be a great year,” Ward said.
At Spruce Mountain School District, new bleachers at Griffin Field will be installed by the start of school, Healey said. An elevator at the high school will take longer and probably be complete by October. Both projects were funded by RSU 73 towns at the April budget meeting.

Bus Routes for MSAD 58:
MSAD #58 wants to remind parents that it is your responsibility to have your students out at their stop at least 10 minutes before their normal pick up time. Our buses average over 40 pick-ups every morning. Waiting even 1 minute for each pick up would make the bus more than one half hour late for school. The Drivers have been instructed not to wait for students who are not at their stops. These routes are subject to change as needed.
Madrid Run – Toothaker Pond –The bus will depart the Phillips School with the first stop being on the East Madrid Rd at 6:35. The bus will continue on to Bredeau’s corner turning left onto Voter Hill Rd, picking up students along the way. The bus will then go to Toothaker Pond Rd, Reed’s Mill Rd, arriving at the Madrid Bridge at about 7:05. The bus will then turn north on Rt. 4 traveling to Pelham’s, turn around and head south on Rt. 4. The bus will then turn onto the Toothaker Pond Rd turning around and returning to Rt. 4. The bus will then go to the #6 Rd and then back to Phillips School, where the students will be dropped off. The bus will then go to, Dodge Rd, Russell Street, Main Street, Park St, Old Blake Hill Rd, and back to the Phillips Elementary School.
Rt. 4 and Avon Valley Run – The bus will depart Salem at 6:30am. Students will be picked up on the way to Rt. 4. The bus will then travel south on Rt. 4 turning around at the County Delight, proceeding north to the Avon Valley Rd, turning around across from the Dixon residence. The bus will then proceed to Pinkham Hill Road and back to the Phillips Elementary School.
In-Town Phillips/Mile Square Run – The bus will leave the bus garage at 6:20, picking up students on the way to Phillips. It will travel to the Wheeler Hill Road, Parlin Rd, then to Bridge Hill to Mile Square, then out to Rt. 149. The bus will then head back to Phillips Village, turn right onto Main Street, left onto Depot Street, right onto Pleasant Street, left onto Whitney St, Sawyer St, left onto Pleasant Street, right onto Seward Street, and right onto Dodge Road proceeding to Ross Avenue and then to the Phillips Elementary School and then on to Mt. Abram High School.
KES Run – Leave Kingfield Elementary School @ 6:50, proceed to West Kingfield Rd, turn around at the end of West Kingfield Rd and Blanchard Road picking students up on the way back to 27/16. Proceed to Narrow Gauge Rd, West Branch Road, Maple Street turning around, left onto Stanley Avenue, proceed to Riverside Street turn around at Indian Stream @ 7:30 return to 16/27, take a left proceed to School Street, left onto Sumner Street to Curve St. then return to Kingfield Elementary School.
KES Salem/Freeman Run – The bus will depart the Kingfield Elementary School @6:40, picking up students on the Foster Hill Rd, then to Baker Hill Rd, Rt. 142 to Salem Village back to the Howard Rd., then Rt. 142 back to Kingfield Elementary School. The bus will then depart Kingfield Elementary School to School St., then to Freeman Ridge Road back to High St. then return to KES.
Lexington/Highland Run – The bus will proceed to the Long Falls Dam Rd. turning around in the Prey driveway @6:45. The bus will begin picking up students and will proceed to Sandy Stream Rd. then return to Long Falls Dam Rd. picking up students along the way back Kingfield Elementary School
Norton Hill Run – The bus will depart the Strong Elementary School @ 6:20. The first pick up will be on Pond Rd, the bus will then head to Taylor Hill. The bus will then proceed to the Spaulding Rd., Pillsbury Rd., Hunter Rd., and Norton Hill. The bus will then drop students off at Strong Elementary School and then proceed to West Freeman Rd. up to Tory Hill turn around picking up students along the way.

The bus will travel to Burbank Hill then to Montford Drive back to Route 149 north, turn around at Votervale Farm; proceed south on Route 149 to River Street, Church Hill Rd, to High St., back to Strong Elementary School.
Strong Salem/Freeman Run – The bus will depart the bus garage @6:55. The first pick up will be at the Lakin’s, and then the bus will proceed to Baker Hill Rd., and then back to Rt. 142. The bus then proceeds to Rt. 145 to Cook Hill and Gilkey Hill then continues on to the Strong Elementary School. The bus will pick up the high school students and return to Mt. Abram High School.

Start at 1425 Federal Road to Butter Hill Road, back to Federal Road, on to Turkey Lane, Israelson Road, back to Boothby Rd. to intersection of Norlands Road back to Federal Road proceed to Round Pond Road to upper section of Robinson Road to High School/Middle School then Livermore Elementary. Drop at LES at 7:10, then proceed in town for MS/HS stops at Pleasant/Latham, Pleasant/Church, Church/High, Church/Bailey, int. of both ends of Cargill and Searles.

Start on Highland Ave. Across top of Highland to Tree Streets (Oak, Maple, etc.) To Park Street, stop at bottom of Oak street for Michelle Moffett’s daycare,to int. of Depot/Main, then Pleasant St., then to Church St/Searles, Church/Cargill, Knapp St, then pick up at Sherry’s Daycare, then to Richardson to Bemis,Otis, (Carol’s Daycare) Prospect, back to Richardson, to Reynolds/Knapp, Millett/Knapp, Union, Green, Millett (all at int. of Knapp.) then to Church, then to Main St. Proceed to JES for drop off then to LES.

First stop is River Road to Schoolhouse Hill Road, to Federal Road, back to River Road, to int. of Strickland Ferry Road to Maple Lane to end of road. Back to Robinson Road to LES to drop at 7:10, then to HS/MS in town stops at intersection of Richardson/Knapp and intersection of Latham Terrace and Pleasant. Drop off at High School/Middle School.
Bus #15. Driver: Norm Miele. First pick up at 6:15 am. First stop on Bean Street to Federal Road to Canton Road to Bear Mt. Road to Shakley Hill Road, back to Canton Road to Church Street to Sanders Road on to Norton Road back to Federal Road to Waters Hill Road, to Federal Road. Drop off at High School/Middle School then Livermore Elementary.

First stop at Meadowbrook to Moose Hill to Heritage Lane, Tradition Way and Jones Road to Pine Ave, Hillcrest at both ends of Bellaire to Sewell Street, then int. of Spring and High, Baldwin and High, and Munsey and High. First stop at intersection of Park and Hillman Ferry Road, proceed on Park Street to Town Line (Tucker Rd.), back to designated stops at mailboxes at both intersections of Hunton Loop to Dodge Road to River Road to Androscoggin Bluff, River Road, stop at Karn Rd., and then back to Park Street.
