High school student paints mural for police station

Missy Brady displays her mural with Police Chief Jack Peck. The mural will be installed inside a children play area in the police station's waiting room.

FARMINGTON - The Richard E. Caton III Memorial Station got a new addition Friday, when a mural painted by a Mt. Blue High School student was installed in the police station's waiting room.

Missy Brady, a senior at MBHS from Farmington, took more than 20 hours to plan, sketch and paint the mural for the police station. The mural will be placed near a children play area, designed to look like an old-fashioned jail. The play area, which is filled with toys and games, provides children in the station something to do while their parents talk to officers.

"It's great for the kids," Chief Jack Peck said. "We've already had kids playing in there."

Brady, who said she'd been painting for years as a way to relax, completed the mural as an act of community service. In addition to community service being considered by colleges, art teacher Roger Bisaillon of Farmington said, the mural work could be included in Brady's portfolio of work.

The mural required multiple coats of paint, with special attention paid to details such as shadowing.

The mural, seen from outside the play area's "jail bars." The painting is mounted on the opposite wall.

  9. Children's play area in a police station?

  10. Gotta have a place for children to go.........because you can't fix stupid.

  11. @Farmingtonian - The play area was there when FMH gave the building to the police department. The police department does occaisionally have children that come in with their parents and since it would have cost money to remove the playhouse the decision was made to leave it in place.

With some volunteers from the department and some money from the Police Benevolent Association the playhouse was turned into a mock jail cell. There were some donations of toys and childrens books added to the playhouse for things to do.

Thank you Missy for adding the last touch needed to make it a kid friendly place to wait while parents speak to an officer.

For the comments regarding copyright issue and the comment about a play area in the police station - it's obvious you have way too much time on your hands to worry about such nonsense!
