The Rec Department has over 20 pairs of skates for free use. Sizes range for children 4 on up through adults sizes. There are also have extra hockey sticks and pond hockey nets. Hot chocolate is offered in the warming hut for 50 cents a cup. Once the sun goes down we have outdoor speakers as well as lighting!
The ice skating rink at Hippach Field in Farmington is now open to the public. The Rec Department has over 20 pairs of skates for free use, along with extra hockey sticks and pond hockey nets.

FARMINGTON – The ice skating rink at Hippach Field is now open, just in time for school vacation.

Unseasonably warm weather hampered efforts earlier this winter to make ice. The ground was slow to freeze well enough to hold water sprayed onto its surface. Instead of staying put and freezing rock solid, the water drained off though channels formed under the ice. That left the surface with hazardous ruts, unsafe for skaters.

But, the good cold winter weather did arrive this week and with it successful ice-making, said Seth Noonkester, the Recreation Department’s assistant director. “Right now but it looks like glass,” he said, “and it looks great.”

Once the sun goes down, lighting and outdoor speakers will add to the fun.

“We would like to apologize for the long delay in opening the rink but we never gave up,” Noonkester added.

The rink will be open through February vacation, he noted. Anyone can skate at any time but the specific hours when Hippach Field’s warming hut is open are as follows:

Sunday – Noon to 9 p.m.
Monday – 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tuesday (Hockey Night) – 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Wednesday – 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday (Hockey Night) – 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday – 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday (Hockey Night) – Noon to 9 p.m.
