Horse rescue getting a little help from friends (5)

INDUSTRY - The Double B Equine Rescue got a much needed roof on Friday from a dozen young volunteers who simply wanted to make a difference.
Twelve carpentry and welding students with Penobscot Job Corps of BangorĀ arrived with hammers and ladders to construct a roof over the entrances of two horse barns. Connecting the barn entrances, that provide the 21 to 22 horses rescued a home, will make life for its volunteer caretakers a lot easier.
"We won't have to deal with the snow, ice and mud. It's a lot better for the horses, too," said Randy Serino, president of the Double B's board of directors. "That's the big thing," he added.
Brenda and Linwood Green manage the nonprofit, state-certified rescue on their 22 acres at 997 West Mills Road.
While Linwood Green directed the students building the peaked roof, Melissa Long of Winterport, a job corps program staff member, brushed Ginger, a new arrival at the rescue. It was Long who became acquainted with the horse rescue after she adopted two horses from here. Well aware of the rescue's roof needs, she suggested the students volunteer their skills as part of the nationwide Make a Difference Day event to be held on Saturday. The Job Corps students have class weekdays so they decided to hold their make A Difference Day on Oct. 21.
"They've got a lot of horses now," Long said brushing Ginger, who arrived two days ago. "Some come in because they can't afford them or they're not a good fit." Ginger, she added, kept getting out of her pen so her owners gave her up.
The majority of the horses are rescued and placed with Double B by the state's Animal Welfare Program because of abuse, neglect or, increasingly, those unable to afford the considerable costs of housing a horse.
"Hay is costly," Serino said."More and more people have to give up their horses." Those increased costs make running a horse rescue that relies on donations even more difficult.
The new roof, built with materials raised from some donations, but mostly come from the Greens who want to continue on with the rescue's work.
"We've been trying to get the roof for two years," Serino said and then he smiled as he looked over at the students working together to build it. "It will be great to have."

Students from Penobscot Jobs Corps build a new roof to connect two barns at the horse rescue on Friday. Linwood Green, a co-owner of the Double B Equine Rescue is glad for the help.

It was so nice to see all the hard work and effort that these young men put into this project. After waiting so long for this it will be nice to finally have. I am looking forward to it being more comfortable for the horses, staff and volunteers. It will definitely make things easier. Thank you to all the volunteers that gave their time at Double B Equine Rescue. Brenda and Lenny have a huge heart when it comes to the horses they care for. They took a horse, LAVROS in a few years ago and treated him with the respect he deserved when nobody else wanted him. I am so thankful !
